Honoring MLK: Operationalizing Equity for Systemic Change

To honor the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Kristen Howard of Michigan Medicine will lead a discussion about operationalizing equity for systemic change.

Kristen leads the Office for Health Equity & Inclusion (OHEI) at Michigan Medicine, which is comprised of the University of Michigan Medical School and health system.  Kristen’s work focuses on managing the diversity, equity and inclusion strategic plan from Michigan Medicine’s faculty, staff, learners, patients, and community.  Her team provides training, professional development, and subject matter expertise with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  In addition, she engages with students of all ages through OHEI’s pathways work which seeks to increase diversity in the health sciences.

Immediately, prior to joining Michigan Medicine she served as chief of staff to the superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Community District.  Although a corporate restructuring attorney by training, through her work in public education, Kristen has experience leading equity, compliance, government affairs, and strategic communications and marketing. 

For her work in Detroit, Kristen was selected as a Michigan Chronicle 40 under 40 honoree.  Kristen is a proud Howard University alumna, and earned her Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University.  Kristen enjoys spending time with her three young sons and being active in her local community.
