Sapna E. Thottathil, MSc, Keynote Speaker - Morning

Sapna E. Thottathil, PhD, MSc is a first generation Indian American that is passionate about finding solutions to global environmental problems. Sapna recently joined the University of California’s Center for Climate, Health and Equity as its Managing Director. Prior to this, she was an Associate Director of Sustainability in the University of California’s Office of the President. She has worked on environmental policy for multiple organizations, from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to Health Care Without Harm, and has taught courses on global environmental politics for graduate and undergraduate students.

Dave Newport, Keynote Speaker - Afternoon

Dave Newport is the Director, Environmental Center, University of Colorado-Boulder. Dave’s background is in environmental and sustainability research, teaching, publishing, and public service. He is a veteran sustainability professional with executive leadership experience in education, business, government, and entrepreneurship.

Previously, as the University of Florida’s first Director of the Office of Sustainability, he researched and published higher educations’ first sustainability report compiled to global business standards, led global efforts aimed at unifying sustainability reporting in higher education, sheparded a plan to make the nation’s fourth largest university “a global leader in sustainability,” launched a zero-waste program that has since become UF’s 2025 target for all operations, and published carbon-neutrality research and planning designed to make the university climate-neutral. Dave was also a founding member of the Board of AASHE.
