Virtual Computer Lab

There are many classes at Ross that require specialized software. But we don't want you to go out and purchase those applications. That's why we offer you the Virtual Lab.

The Virtual Lab is a group of of forty-eight simultaneous connections that allow you to use that software on your personal laptops and home computers by remote access over the Internet. With Virtual Lab, you not only have access to the software, but you have the convenience to access the applications from any computer and any location.

Important things to remember:

Within the Virtual Lab window, it is exactly like you are using a lab computer. There is no direct connection to your own computer - the fact it appears within a window on your computer can be deceptive! The file is stored on the Virtual Lab computer, not your own.  Once you end your session, the file will be lost.

When printing something from within the Virtual Lab window, you are printing to a Ross printer, not to your personal printer. You will first need to save the file, then you can print it.

Here are some ways to save your file in a location you can access:
  • Email the file to yourself by opening up a web browser window in the Virtual Lab Machine.
  • ITCS storage space at http://mfile.umich.edu: MFile offers direct web access to your ITCS-provided file storage space.  From this same website, you can access the files using any computer with an internet connection.
  • iMpact My Site:  My Site is a SharePoint site where you can can store and access your files through the web, among many other features.  You can learn more about My Site under the Basic Features menu.
