Stewart was born in Cleveland in 1928 and received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his MFA from the University of Michigan School of Art and Design, where he later held a teaching position. Stewart mainly focuses on making prints that have abstract and theoretical juxtaposition of colors and shapes. He often prints on hand-made paper, which he produces himself.
This body of work consists of high relief intaglio prints on handmade paper using four to eight colors. Stewart has been interested in aerial views of the earth as sources for some elements in his work. Aerial landscapes as a subject have given him a freedom to examine ways of combining patterns that are not limited to the orientation of the horizons. “My work has more to do with [the concept of] random as a means of stretching traditional boundaries and causing change than describing visual situations.”
