Sorman received his BFA in Painting from the University of Minnesota in 1971 and has been represented in shows and collections since. Sorman is most known for his multimedia , complex paintings, drawings, and prints. Collage is a central part of his artistic practice. He creates detailed layered works with his skill in using line, media, and color.

Shoulder is comprised of three successive vertical images which together make up a horizontal piece. Two brown-based pieces flank a predominantly blue and white central panel.
