If a laptop is needed for regular use or an extended period of time, faculty
can choose to purchase a laptop from their departmental account.
New
faculty, and faculty scheduled for an upgrade as part of our regular 3 year
cycle, may choose between a laptop or a desktop computer from our current
standard Supported Hardware list. If both a laptop and desktop computer are
desired, one must be privately funded from the account.

assistance.

Using a Laptop on Our Network? |
|
 |
Try Offline File Synchronization

Saving files on
the network offers two advantages over saving files on
the hard drive:
- The network is backed
up nightly (unlike most hard drives).
- Files are accessible
over the Web from anywhere (using
FTP).
Windows 2000 and XP on faculty and staff office computers allows Offline file
access to network files. Windows will copy files saved on the network to your
hard drive so that when you are not connected to the network, you can access the
"offline" version on your hard drive. Changes made to either version
synchronize every time you log out of Windows.
The default setup for network folders is for no offline file access. If
you are not connected to the network, you cannot access these files.
To Enable Offline File Synchronization
Right click on the My Documents folder on your Desktop and choose "Make
Available Off-line."
You can right click on any network folder to choose to make it available
off-line.
Please note that this will
slightly slow down the process when you shut down and
reboot. If you skip synchronization you may not
have access to all of your files until the next time you
synchronize.

Student Laptops
Faculty may coordinate with MBA students
to use student-owned laptops in any classroom:
- Our MBA students are expected to have laptops
- Well over 90% use
wireless Internet access, which covers all classrooms.
- Major classrooms have Ethernet and power
connections at the seats for laptop users. An Ethernet
cable is required.
- The
Virtual Lab allows lab software use over the Internet on student computers.
Since BBA students are not expected to own laptops, the
number of BBA's with laptops will be significantly less for classroom
application.
Many students may wish to use laptops to take notes, etc. however, laptops
can sometimes serve as a distraction and divert attention away from a case
discussion, etc. Faculty may choose to make their own policies for laptop use
in class.
Projecting a Laptop
To project a laptop in a classroom, connect it with the
cables on the instructor's desk and use the Crestron touch screen control
to select the laptop display.
Please note most laptops require a keyboard command, such
as Function + F8 for Dell computers, to send the
display signal through the display cable. This
keyboard command will vary
by laptop make and model.
See the Labs and Classrooms section for more
information about classrooms.
