Students The Business School provides a mobile computing environment where access to information services is essential for success.  We strongly recommend that our MBA and Ph.D. students purchase a laptop computer and software.

 The Laptop Advantage

A laptop computer is as much a part of the graduate programs as textbooks and course packs.

MBA and PhD graduate students attending the University of Michigan Business School are expected to own a laptop computer.  BBA students may benefit from a laptop and can take advantage of the services, but are not expected to own one.

Most courses use web-based UM CTools for instruction and support.

Our mobile computing environment provides wireless Internet access, virtual lab software, and printing for laptop users from anywhere in the school.

The school provides facilities to complement student laptops.  See our Labs and Classrooms section for information on our Mobile Computing Environment and Laptops in the Classroom.

Quick Answers
Our Laptop Support FAQ provides quick answers to some of the most frequent problems seen by our staff.

 Classroom Etiquette

When using your laptop in the classroom:

Check with your professors as to their preferences and guidelines for your laptop use within their class.  This will vary from professor to professor and from class to class.
While class is in session, pay your professors respect by giving them your full attention - don't surf the web or read e-mail during class.

 Buying Recommendations

What to Buy for the MBA Program?

Go Windows! The Business School is a Windows environment.  Macs are not able to use some services. Our Laptop Support team reports higher student satisfaction with the Windows XP Professional OS (vs the XP Home version).

Go lightweight!  You will be carrying it around much of the day.  (5-6lbs at most; many students opt for ultra-lightweights under 2lbs)

Special Offers on Laptops! Every year, Michigan Business students can take advantage of great deals on laptops.  Once this year's offers are available, links above will take you to Lenovo and Dell's special offers.

See our Specs and other guidelines for making a decision.

MS Office
You will need the Office 2007 suite of applications.  Due to issues with analysis functions in Excel 2007, you will also need to download the Excel 2007 Regression Tool Charting Fix.

MS Office 2007 can be purchased from Computing Showcase for an educational discount.  Enrolled students can purchase the Office Suite for approximately $50.

 Keep Your Laptop Healthy

It’s Your Laptop, Handle with Care

As a tool for your education, protect your laptop to maintain its stability. Adding anything to your laptop can affect its stability. We therefore urge you to not load ANY software or hardware that is not recommended by the Business School or does not directly support your instructional use. You are ultimately responsible for your laptop and the one that suffers the loss, so take great care and effort to protect yourself!

Follow These Safe Computing Practices

Avoid Viruses

Keep your anti-virus software up-to-date. McAfee Virus Scan auto-updating version is available for free through the University of Michigan.  It can be downloaded from ITCS and is linked from the Software page.

Never open attachments that you are not expecting to receive without first confirming with the sender that the person truly sent it to you. Many viruses are sent through attachments which appear to be from someone you know. The virus is launched by only opening the attachment, not the email message.

Check into reports of new viruses. Some are hoaxes, some are serious. Check the vendor site such as McAfee, or the University of Michigan’s Virus Busters website for late-breaking news.

Avoid installing unnecessary software
A stable laptop is comprised of a many variables working together. Every installation changes the laptop’s configuration and risks compromising stability. It is a delicate tool, and since it is an academic tool, we recommend you dedicate your laptop’s configuration for academic purposes only.

Back up your hard drive and data files regularly
Protect yourself in case of failure for any reason. We loan external zip drives that can be used for this purpose which are available for check-out at the Library Reserve desk.
