  Remote Network Access

The Business School network and Campus file servers provide networked private and shared file storage space.  Benefits of saving your files on the network include nightly back up and access over the web or using FTP software.

  Data Backup and File Recovery

Shadow Copy
Beginning Monday, August 4, 2008, certain network file shares (S: and U: drives, R:\Web) will have a service to allow you to access prior versions of your network files. This service is based on a Microsoft Windows feature called Shadow Copy. It periodically creates copies of files as you work so you can retrieve versions of a document you may have accidentally deleted or overwritten. We schedule Shadow Copies to be created every three hours during the business day and once at night. That is five network file snapshots per day to better protect your important work! Shadow Copy history will be retained for up to two weeks.

Data Backup
An advantage to saving files on the network is that they are backed up nightly.  The Business School file servers are backed up each night at midnight.  Tapes are stored off-site for disaster recovery - please note there is a charge to recover files older than three weeks from the off-site service.

Contact the Helpdesk for help in establishing regular backups for your personal computer.

  Navigating the RSB Network

The various lettered drives seen on Business School networked computers are actually shortcuts to folders on the R:\ drive.

U:\ Drive
R:\FacStaff\<first letter of uniqname>\<uniqname>
The U:\ drive folder is used for personal file storage for Faculty and Staff.  This folder synchronizes with the My Documents folder on any office, lab or classroom computer within the Business School.  Files in the My Documents folder on your personal office computer are available locally when there is a network outage.

S:\ Drive
R:\Departments\<Department Name>
The S:\ drive folder gives staff a quick link to their department's shared folder on the network server.

R:\Public\Share
This shared folder can be used by Faculty and Staff to share files with colleagues and coworkers.

R:\Courses
The R:\Courses folder is available for Faculty to post documents to Students.  Students have read-only access to this folder.  Lab and Classroom computers have automatic access to this folder.

R:\Public\GuestFTP
The GuestFTP folder allows Faculty, Staff and Students to share files with guests outside of the Business School.

Remote Access to the RSB Network

SFTP Access
If you have a Secure FTP program you can use FTP to access the Business School Network and transfer files or edit webuser sites.  Enter the following to connect to your IFS space:

Host Name:  allfiles.bus.umich.edu
Host Type:  automatic detect
User ID/Login:   uniqname
Password:
  Business School password

Web Access to Business School File Servers

  1. Go to ftp://allfiles.bus.umich.edu using Windows Internet Explorer*

  • FTP access requires Internet Explorer - other browsers, such as Netscape, will not work.

  • "Enable FTP Folder View" must be selected on the Advanced tab of the Internet Options window.

  1. Login with your uniqname and Business School password.

  2. This will place you in the root network folder (R:\ drive).
  3. Navigate to any folder you have rights to (i.e. your personal folder under FacStaff).
  4. Drag and drop files to and from the browser window to transfer them between your computer and the network.
