Understanding Your Logins
Your logins provide access to your many University resources.
Faculty and Staff have two basic logins: 1) a campus-wide login and 2) a Business School login. Both use the same "uniqname" (pronounced "unique name") user I.D., but use separate passwords because they are separate systems.
Your Kerberos Campus Login
Your campus-wide login is known as your uniqname and uses a secure Kerberos-authenticated password known as your "uniqname password," your "Kerberos" password, your "U-Mich password" or your "ITCS password." This login gives you access to the campus modem dial-in pool, university databases and iMpact. Your account must maintain current funding to access login services. This login is created and managed by ITCS Accounts office (phone 764-8000). Depending on how and when your account was created, our Business School Computing Services staff may be able to assist you or
can facilitate assistance with ITCS.
Use Your Kerberos Login for:
- Modem dial-in
- iMpact (uses Kerberos authentication)
- Wolverine Access, the Online Campus Directory and other campus web sites
Your Business School Network Login
Your Business School network login is created and managed by Computing Services staff. It is a Microsoft Networking account which provides access to the Business School-managed Local Area Network. This login allows you access to the Business School Microsoft File Servers (your network drives R, S and U), network printers, and the Webuser and Exchange E-Mail servers. This account uses your uniqname as your User ID, with a Business School Microsoft Networking password.
Use Your Business School Login for:
- Your Office Computer Network Login (network printing,
Internet, e-mail and file servers), including your Windows 2000/XP profile
- Webmail login
- FTP to the Business School File Servers
Note: Windows 2000 uses profiles. Your user ID and password account is based on your personal uniqname and you have full administrator rights to your computer. It also has a "Local Administrator" user ID and password which important in case the network is down or as a backup to access your computer. For security, you will want to change this password under Start - Programs - Local Password, and keep it safe and available. You may wish to make it the same as you regular login password.
Warning:
Many people use the initial password to this account. This is not secure - please change it for your security (see section below on changing your passwords.)
For more information, see iMpact's Accounts & Passwords page for a description on your various accounts and services.
Tip:
You can set both accounts to use the same password. Since the Kerberos password is more restrictive in what is allowed, set your Kerberos password first and then set your Business School password to match.

Changing Your Passwords
Change Your Password When You Change Your Clocks!
To protect your privacy and security, we recommend that you change your UMICH
Kerberos password once every six months. Why not change your password when you
change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time?
For a more secure password, use at least six characters with symbols and numbers - for example, instead of the word "apple" use "#apple4" or "1$apple." Avoid dictionary words, dates, pet or child names, words like password, Michigan, Blue, your uniqname, or other easily guessed or cracked character strings.
For help selecting a secure password, see
Choosing and Changing a
Secure UMICH Password (R1162).
How to change your ITCS campus "Kerberos" password
WARNING!
Kerberos Passwords that have not been changed since December 1998
will stop working on May 15, 2006. If your
password stops working, phone the ITCS Accounts Office or 4-HELP at 764-4357
(Option 1) to get it reset.
Your campus password is known as your "uniqname password," your "Kerberos" password, your "U-Mich password" or your "ITCS password." It allows you access to campus services as well as Business School services that require a secure internet login, such as iMpact. Internal Business School services use the Business School network password.
You can change your UMICH Kerberos password on the web at
https://accounts.www.umich.edu/kpasswd/
If you are a temporary employee and/or are not funded with the campus Basic Computing Package, you will not have access to change your password. Please see Computing Services staff for assistance.
How to change your Business School password
Business School Faculty, Staff and Ph.D.s have a personal login for the Business School network.
This Business School login uses your uniqname as your User ID. (See the Understanding Your Logins section above).
The Business School login is:
User ID: your uniqname
Password: initially given to new users by Computing Services then reset by you
in Windows
Change your password in Windows by pressing the Control+Alt+Delete key, then clicking on the Change Password button. Note this will change your Exchange/Outlook login password as well. (If you are using an OS other than Windows, please contact the Helpdesk).
Note:
Don’t continue to use the default password you are given with your new account! Change your password immediately to protect access to your files and email.

Network Guidelines
Our Business School LAN is a shared resource that everyone in our community needs to use responsibly to preserve the speed and convenience for all users.
Please observe the following:
- Faculty, staff and Ph.Ds have personal file space. An individual's personal
folder is named with their uniqname in R:\FacStaff,
organized under the first letter of the uniqname. This folder is typically
mapped as the "U" drive.
- Faculty folders have a limit of 100 MB, Staff folders
have a limit of 50 MB.
- Please do not transfer, copy or run large files to the
network. Break them into smaller files or zip them.
- Notify the Helpdesk/Network Administrators if you are
planning to run a network intensive session (such as video streaming a
session) to ensure it will not conflict with other planned maintenance.
- Save work on the network that is irreplaceable and
needs to be backed up reliably.
- Save the following types of files only on your hard
drive and not on the network: EXEs and programs, large downloads such as
videos, graphics, music, and other multimedia files.
- Please contact the Helpdesk if you need to make special arrangements.
