Ross Recruiting & Outreach FAQ's

General

Where is "The Recruiting and Outreach Team"?

    Location: First floor Wyly building

Hours: 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday.

How do I contact Career Services with a question?

The best way to contact Ross Career Services is through email.

What is the difference between "Recruiting and Outreach Team" and "Career Counsulting?"

Career Services has two main functions: managing on-campus career opportunities and student career education.

    • Recruiting and Outreach Team manages on-campus recruiter events, job postings, and interviewing.
    • Career Consulting handles general student inquiries about the recruiting process as well as provide workshops and counseling services.

Corporate Events & Networking Opportunities

How can I find out when and where a company will be presenting on-campus?

Corporate events will be listed on iMpact under Student Events.

What should I wear to corporate presentations and "Meet the Companies" events?

Remember that you are a representative of Michigan at these events. Most presentations are business casual unless advertised specifically. Jeans and sneakers are never acceptable. If professional dress or casual dress is requested, please review our Pinterest site. Before attending an event, always be sure to turn off all your electronic equipment: cell phones, PDAs, laptops, etc.

I have a meeting before/after a corporate presentation, is it okay to attend part of the session or stop by after?

Make every effort to be on-time for all presentations. If you MUST arrive late or leave early, let the recruiter know ahead of time and position yourself quietly next to a door and do not cause a disturbance by walking in in the middle of a presentation. Many companies will host receptions after the presentation to continue conversation with attendees.  If you did not attend the presentation, refrain from dropping in for a ‘free dinner’.

What preparation is required of me before a corporate presentation?

Do some homework on the company that is presenting.  During the Q&A session, be prepared with some relevant questions.  Ask only questions which would benefit the group as a whole rather than specific questions relating to your circumstances.  Most companies hold a reception after their presentation where you will be able to talk with recruiters one-on-one and ask more individual questions. Please see the Networking at Events online presentation for more details.

On-Campus Interviewing & Bidding

What do I do if I need to cancel my interview?

Email RossCareerServices@umich.edu. We will assist you with the appropriate way to withdraw from an interview.

How does the bidding system work?

Please see General Bidding Information or Bidding FAQ for more details. Bidding workshops are offered prior to full-time and internship interviewing.

Bidding Overview

Start by submitting your resume and cover letter for a particular job. You will be either placed on the Closed List, Alternate Closed List, or you will need to Bid.

  • If you are invited to the Closed List, you can accept the invitation and be charged 50 bid points, which will place you on the interview schedule. You can decline the invitation for no charge.

  • If you are invited to the Alternate Closed List, you can accept it for no charge. If a spot on the interview schedule opens, you will be placed on the interview schedule and will be charged 50 points. You will not know your rank on the alternate closed list.

  • If you did not receive a closed list invitation, you may Bid for a spot on the interview schedule.

    • If you bid and are successful, you are charged Market Clearing Price and placed on the interview schedule. Remember that MCP is the lowest successful bid to get onto the interview schedule.

    • If you bid and are not successful, you are then placed on the Bidding Wait List, which is ranked by the amount each student bid for that job. If a bidding interview slot comes open, the first wait listed student will be promoted onto the schedule and charged his or her bid price, not the Market Clearing Price.

    • Your bid points are held while you are on the wait list. You may remove yourself from the wait list at any time without penalty and your bid points will be refunded immediately. If you are not promoted to the interview schedule, your bid points will be returned the day of the interview.
