WebUser

It is easy to set up or maintain a web site, whether it is personal or school-related.  Faculty, staff, Ph.D. and student groups use the Business School Webuser server.  Students use their IFS space on campus servers.

  Introducing Webuser

Webuser is the Business School's on-site web server available to faculty, staff and official student and alumni groups.  It offers:

  • Easy web site management over the Business School network from an faculty or staff office computer.
  • Easy FTP Remote Access from computers over the Internet.

Webuser sites can be personal, independent, or coordinated with other websites.  For example, many Business School web site and iMpact pages are managed on Webuser so that staff have direct access for editing.

Faculty/Staff Accounts
All faculty and staff have an account on our Webuser server, which is directly accessed from office computers by navigating to R:\Web\Webuser\Users.  When you log into your computer with your Business School account you have access to your folder.

Contact the Helpdesk if your site is for the School and you wish it in a location other than your personal folder.  You will need editing rights to modify files or create new subfolders in a folder. Please note you may have listing rights to a folder which allows you to navigate to a subfolder where you have full editing rights.

Student and Alumni Accounts
An individual representing an official group must request a Webuser account from the Helpdesk and be sure to notify the Helpdesk when responsibility for the site changes to other individuals.  They will be given a group login, which must be renewed annually.  Individuals responsible will receive an email renewal notice.

Folder Rights
You will only have access to your personal Webuser folder unless other Webuser folders have been requested.  If you need access to a folder that you do not have rights to access, please contact the Helpdesk.

  Setting Up a Webuser Site

You can create your web pages in html editing software, and save these files directly on the server from a Business School computer or FTP from a laptop or from a computer outside of the school.

  1. Log in to a Faculty or Staff office computer or FTP to the Business School file servers.
  2. Navigate to your folder in R: \Web\Webuser\Users.  You will not be able to open folders for which you do not have rights.
  3. Prepare your web page files in the html editor of your choice.  The Business School provides and supports FrontPage.
  4. Save your files on the Webuser server in your folder.
  5. Test your work.
  6. Arrange for links from Business School website if relevant by contacting the Computing Services Web Development Team.
  7. Announce your address.  The web address to a particular file will be:
    http://webuser.bus.umich.edu/folder name /filename.extention
  Remote Access to Webuser

Students, as well as staff and faculty away from their office, will need to FTP to the Business School file servers to access Webuser files for editing.

FTP a copy of the file from the web server to your computer where you can edit it with your software, then FTP the file back from your computer onto the server to overwrite the old version with the updated one.

  • To edit an existing web page on Webuser, first FTP the file from the server to your computer, make your changes in FrontPage or another HTML editor, then FTP the file back to the server.
  • To add a new page that you created on your computer, FTP it to the Webuser server.  To create a link to it from an existing web page, next FTP the existing page to your computer, add the link then save your changes, and FTP it back to the server.
  • Be sure to keep the same folder and file names, so other links to that page will still work.
