Virtual Lab

 Introducing Our Virtual Lab

Take Course Software out of the Lab

A "Virtual Lab" of forty-eight simultaneous connections allow lab software to run on personal laptops and home computers by remote access over the Internet. This eliminates the need to be on an actual Business School computer to complete necessary assignments with specific software.

Need Help?

For assistance, please see our laptop support team on the second floor of the Kresge Library, or email them at RossLaptopHelp@umich.edu.

Please note we can only provide support using our wireless or Ethernet Internet connections for Virtual Lab use within the Business School.  If you use the Virtual Lab from outside of the school, we will be unable to support you due to external variables of Internet access, firewalls, etc.

Tips

  • High speed Internet access is recommended for your satisfaction.  While the Virtual Lab will work over a modem it will be too slow to be useful.

  • Remember when printing something from within the Virtual Lab window that you are printing to a lab printer, not to your personal printer.

  • When you wish to save a file within the Virtual Lab window, it is similar to using a lab computer - you will need to use the Virtual Lab desktop icon to log into your personal network space where you can save your file and access it using FTP from your home computer.  There is not a work around for FTP - remember within the Virtual Lab window it is exactly like you are using a lab computer.  There is no direct connection to your own computer - the fact it appears within a window on your computer can be deceptive!

 Installing the Virtual Lab Software

To use the Virtual Lab, a small program is required to be installed on your computer.

  • GET IT HERE!  Simply download the Virtual Lab software to run the installation program. A new menu item named "Virtual Lab" will be added under your Start - Programs menu.

  • From the Start - Programs -Virtual Lab menu select "Connect to the Virtual Lab." It will connect to an available Virtual Lab computer then prompt you to login with your uniqname and password.

  • The lab desktop will open up in a window on your computer and allow you to use the lab computer remotely with your own keyboard, mouse and monitor. You can use the Start menu within this virtual lab window to launch a program, and then use the software as you normally would - only virtually off of a remote computer rather than from your hard drive.

  • If you happen to lose your Internet connection, within ten minutes you can choose the "reconnect to the same computer" option.  After ten minutes, your connection will be released and you will need to log into a new computer.

  • When you are finished, click the Logout icon on the desktop just like on a lab PC.
