Live Communication Server

 Instant Messaging with MS Office Communicator 2005

What is Instant Messaging and what can it do for you?

Instant Messaging, commonly referred to as ‘IM’, is a real-time collaboration tool that can include text chat, whiteboard, file transfer, application sharing, voice and video. IM enables you to have real-time conversations with one or more individuals.

The IM client used with our Live Communication Server (LCS) is MS Office Communicator 2005.  Use Communication to not only chat, but instantly share documents, work together within an application and brainstorm with a shared whiteboard.  With Communicator, you no longer have to schedule a meeting or wait for a return email.

You may already have an application installed for instant messaging, but this application is run off a dedicated University server.  This IM is already connected to our LCS server, making it even easier to use in our environment.

Using this IM program will makes it a snap for students to keep in touch with classmates, work remotely with team mates, or get help remotely from groups such as Laptop Support

With our LCS, your coworkers and colleagues are already be connected as soon as they install Communicator!  Faculty and Staff can use Communicator to quickly share documents, get instant answers to questions, or get instant live assistance remotely from the Helpdesk.

 Installing the LCS Software

To begin using LCS at Ross, you must first install MS Office Communicator 2005.

Currently, LCS can only be used on Windows-based systems.  A web solution for Mac users is coming soon!
