Posters are a critical media for advertising news and events. Ross has
introduced new plasma monitors to display posters digitally. These same
posters are viewable on iMpact. These instructions will help you make
the most of this new presentation media and help you advertise your event in
style!
IMPORTANT !!! NEW SPECS !!! IMPORTANT
Be sure to check this page regularly as this is a new technology we are experimenting with and file types, dimensions and other variables could change at anytime with out notice.
Once you have made sure your poster meets the following requirements, email the
file to
Plasma-printinfo@bus.umich.edu. Please allow at least 24 hours for your request to appear on our digital signage rotation (Monday - Friday). If you submit your request on a Saturday or a Sunday, it will not appear until that following week. Thank you!

The goal for the Digital Signage Display’s at the
Ross School of Business is to maintain a high degree of quality. The images
displayed will not just be seen by faculty, staff and students, but also
alumni, potential donors, and visiting business leaders. Design your
promotional material with this in mind. Poor displays show a lack of care.
Setting the Proper Page Dimensions
The page size of the design
MUST BE 10.8 W x 16 H (inches) or 1080 W x 1600 H (pixels). Any other page size will not fit the monitor and your
file will be returned. Setting the page size is generally found under Page Setup under File in the Menu Bar. As an example, in PowerPoint its just File/Page setup. Do not use a
landscape orientation.
Using Images in Your Design
If you use an image in your
design it should be at least 72 dpi (dots per inch) in resolution. If you do
not know the dpi of your image you can check it in the following manner. You
will need Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements. Open the image in PS or PE and
go to the top Menu Bar and under the Image Menu select Image Size. A
dialogue box will open. Look for “Resolution”. The number in the resolution
box is the dpi of the image you opened. If you took the image off the web
the number typically shown is 72.
Important Tip:
The actual size of the image
you use is very important. A small image at 72 dpi cannot be enlarged
because it will pixilate. Use an image that is physically large in
size....8” x 10”, etc and size it down to fit. Files that have pixilated
images will be returned. It is better to have no image than to have a poor
display on the monitors.

|
It is your
responsibility to ensure that any images used in the display design
are either copyright free or you have obtained written permission to
use the image. Images taken from the web are almost never copyright
free. If in doubt about an image you should contact Marketing and
Communications to obtain their approval to use the image.

You may use whatever application that you feel most
comfortable with. However, native files (i.e., Word, Illustrator, Photoshop,
PowerPoint, etc.) will no longer be accepted. ONLY .pdf, .jpg or PowerPoint files with appropriate dimensions will be
accepted for input to the displays.
Converting Native Files
To convert any native file to a .pdf
format, you must have Adobe Acrobat Professional installed (please note that
Acrobat Reader is not the same as Acrobat Professional). From the program
you are using, go to File... Print... and choose Adobe PDF as the printer.
You will be prompted to save the .pdf file.
Please provide us with either a PowerPoint file, JPG File or PDF File using the following dimensions:
- PDF or PowerPoint File Formats
- JPG File
Format
- 1080 pixels width X 1600 pixels height
- 72 DPI or greater resolution

Do's and Don'ts
-
Ensure
that your design page setup is the proper 10.8 W x 16 H or ( 1080 pixels
Width X 1600 pixels Height at 72DPI )
-
Do not use a landscape orientation.
-
Use only PowerPoint, PDF or JPG file formats
with the required dimensions – only these file
formats will be accepted for input to the displays. Do not submit files in
any other format.
-
If using the Ross School of
Business Brand (logo) please use the appropriate logo and do not distort or
alter the original in any way. More information on the School's brand
identity can be found in the
Strategic Tool Kit.
-
Choose images that are
appropriate in resolution and won’t pixilate. You can size a large image
down but you CAN NOT enlarge a small image.
-
Use large type for readability – small type
is nearly impossible to read. If you have information that you feel is
critical, use a URL on the display and put the information on a webpage.
-
Avoid using an
all white background or even a “mostly” white background... at a minimum use
a light color or a tint of a color. White backgrounds will not display as
vibrantly as using a medium to dark background with lighter colored text.
Because of the nature of
the new medium, the following WILL NOT be accepted:
- Improper page sizes
- Improper page
orientation
- Improper image
resolutions
- Improper file
formats
Any files that do not
meet these requirements will be returned.

For your convenience we have provided a number
of approved templates for you to use if you wish to do so. These templates are
image free, they provide the maximum space
for your text. Each template design is provided as a PowerPoint file or a .jpg
image, which you can use in the application of your choice. To download a
template file, right-click the link and choose "Save Target As..."
Once you have downloaded the PowerPoint file, you will see that it indicates where the text and image should be placed. To place your text, you will can simply type directly over the text within that perticular information zone. Please place your image only in the space provided.
If you choose to use the .jpg template design, please take a look at the samples that we have made available to you. They also indicate where the text and image should be placed, but you are free to choose your font and color if you would like.
