  Remote Network Access

Your files, email and even your office desktop computer are accessible remotely.  There are a number of methods available.

 Webmail

Your personal Business School email can be accessed through the internet at http://webmail.bus.umich.edu.  Log in with your uniqname and your Business School password.  Note: you will not have access to other email accounts, even if you have delegate rights.

Department email accounts can be accessed at http://webmail.bus.umich.edu/exchange/ <"department account">.  Login with your uniqname and Business School password.  You can only access department accounts that you have rights to.

 Accessing Network Files

You can access any files on the network, whether in your My Documents folder or a department folder using ftp web access.  Complete details can be found on the Faculty/Staff Access tab above.

 Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A virtual private network (VPN) is a secure access to data and/or resources. Privacy is achieved through the use of a tunneling protocol and security procedures. Using a VPN involves encrypting data before sending it through the public network and decrypting it at the receiving end. An additional level of security involves encrypting not only the data but also the originating and receiving network addresses.

Enabling Faculty and Staff to connect to our computer network from remote locations makes good business sense by minimizing the security risks inherent in data transfer across the Internet.

Advantages to using a VPN:

  1. The ability to map network drives and securely access our shared network space.

  2. Increased security. Data passed through the VPN tunnel is encrypted between the remote connection and the Business School Network.

  3. Upon authentication with a UniqName and Password, the VPN concentrator assigns an IP address to the connection. A University IP address is required to access some services that are restricted; such as, library databases.

 Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop is a Windows XP built-in utility that allows for the control of a computer running Windows XP from a remote client computer via a local area network or Internet.

Requirements to Run Remote Desktop

Your office computer must be running Windows XP Professional and configured to run the Remote Desktop Service.  If your office machine is not running Windows XP Professional, contact the Helpdesk.  Your office computer must also be connected to a wired Ethernet connection within the RSB.  A wireless connection will not work due to security restrictions.

The client computer can be running any version of Windows that is Windows 95 or greater or it can even be a Macintosh.  However, in all cases except client machines already running Windows XP, the appropriate client software must be installed.

Windows:

Mac:

T
he client computer also must be either connected to a wired connection in the Ross School of Business or have a connection to the Internet.  Broadband is highly recommended, though dial-up will work.

Setting up your office machine for Remote Desktop

The installation file will require a reboot, so be sure to save and close any work first.

Enable Remote Desktop:

Connecting to your office machine

First, you must know the name of your office machine.  Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System.  Click on the Computer Name tab.  Next to Full computer name:, your computer name is, by standard, in the form bus-ws-machine_serial#.bus.ads.itcs.umich.edu.  If yours is not, contact the Helpdesk.  Write it down on a sticky note and take it with you.

Next, on the client or remote computer, you launch the Remote Desktop Client.  It is found under Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection.

Next, you enter the full computer name you wrote down on the sticky note followed by :7678 in the Computer: drop-down box and click Connect.

Example: bus-ws-xxxxxxx.bus.ads.itcs.umich.edu:7678

Troubleshooting your connection

If you are unable to connect, it may be due to your local ISP not having up-to-date domain name service information for your office computer.  You will then have to connect using your office computer’s IP address.

You can find your office computer’s IP address by downloading and running the

Office Machine IP Lookup Utility  .
