Intel Wireless Chipset Info

Problems with Intel Wireless Chipset

How do I know if I'm affected?

Find out if you have the affected Intel Wireless Chip through one of the following methods:

  1. Go to the Desktop and right-click on My Computer then choose Manage ? Device Manager. Double-click Network adapters and look for "Intel PRO Wireless..." in the list of adapters.

  2. Open the Start menu and click "Run...". Enter "cmd" At the Command Prompt, type "ipconfig /all" and hit Enter. Look for the words "Intel PRO Wireless..." by scrolling through the list.

  3. Open the Start menu and look for a program folder called "Intel PROSet Wireless" in the Programs menu.

After "Intel PRO Wireless" you will see a number and some letters, such as "2200BG" or "3945ABG". Write down that number and turn the card over for the solution.

FYI: Some manufactures rename the chipset, so it may not be labeled "Intel". For example, the Dell TrueMobile 2200BG is the same chipset as the Intel PRO Wireless 2200BG.

 Symptoms

The predominant symptom is fluctuating signal strength - one minute you'll get an excellent connection, then the signal starts to fade and you're unable to communicate with the network.  The signal strength may jump back up and you may be able to reconnect, but it will continue this connect-disconnect cycle indefinitely.

How do I fix the problem?

Install the latest available drivers from Intel's website to resolve the issue:

  1. Go to Intel's Download Finder at http://downloadfinder.intel.com.

  2. Choose Wireless ? Wireless LAN Products from the left-hand menu. Find the most current download for your chipset.

  3. Follow the download instructions. Because of the size of the file, do not use a wireless connection. Ethernet ports are located throughout the Ross campus.

  4. After the download is complete, double-click on the installer file. You may have to enter our SSID and encryption information.

You may still have problems if you own a Lenovo or IBM laptop with Intel wireless chipset Access Connections. Uninstall Access Connections through Start ? Settings ? Control Panel ? Add/Remove Programs.

If you need help, visit the Laptop Support team on the main floor of the Kresge Library.
