Brightmail SPAM Filter

Setting Up Brightmail On Your Exchange Account

Brightmail is a spam filter that works with the Business School Exchange email system.  It scans all messages coming into the Exchange email system and flags any messages that meet its spam criteria.  Outlook can then use a Rule to identify these flagged messages so they are not delivered to the Inbox.

How Do I Import the Brightmail Rule?

Outlook rules are saved as .rwz files when stored on your computer.  We have created a similar rule that can be imported into your Outlook account and placed it on the network for your use.

How Do I Create the Brightmail Rule Myself?

An Outlook Rule is simply a set of criteria for Outlook to use to perform actions on messages.  If you would prefer to create the rule yourself, instead of importing the Rule from the network, just follow the Rules Wizard to enter the criteria.

Instructions:

How can I set up Brightmail with my Department mailbox?

In order to apply the Brightmail Rule to a department mailbox, you must first set up a separate Outlook profile for that account.  Then you can open Outlook using that profile to apply the Brightmail Rule.

Instructions (Outlook 2007):

Can I set up Brightmail using Webmail?

No, the rule cannot be created in Webmail.  To create the Brightmail Rule on your exchange account, you must first login to your account Outlook on our network, then create the Rule using one of the methods above.  Since this rule is client-side, meaning it is stored in your account instead of your computer, the Rule will run even if you are not using Outlook.  You can use webmail, and your messages will still be moved to your Junk email folder.

What Is the Symantec Toolbar and why would I need it?

No spam filter is perfect.  Spammers are always finding new ways to get around the filters' criteria.  The Symantec toolbar (formerly called the Brightmail toolbar) allows you to control the spam that slips through the filter.  Marking the message as spam from the toolbar will move the message to your Junk email folder and notify Brightmail so they can keep up with the spammers.

The toolbar can be installed directly from our network.

NOTE:  If you have upgraded to Office 2007, this toolbar is automatically installed and available in Outlook.
