Working Off Campus
Is wireless connection available outside the
Business School complex?
The Ross School of Business is covered
by an 802.11a/b/g wireless network, which provides our students with
wireless Internet access throughout the Business School complex and
courtyard, as well as other UM campus locations:
More information on the
campus wireless network is available through ITCS.
The Ross wireless network is exclusive and designed to protect our
resources for Business School students only, therefore
setup for our wireless network has
additional steps.

Signal strength will
vary and may be blocked by concrete pillars, elevator
shafts, doors, etc. |
For your convenience, power outlets are
available in all main classrooms, the student lounge, group study
rooms and the Kresge Library.
How can I access my email?
Many email providers have a website
available to access email. Your University account provided
through ITCS is no exception. You can easily access your email
from any computer with internet connection through
www.mail.umich.edu. Login with your uniqname and
University password.
How can I access files my professor saved on
R:\Courses?
The R:\Courses folder can be accessed on your laptop and from
off campus through the internet using ftp. The files and
folders in R:\Courses are read-only - students cannot save or
modify files in this network location.
How can I get access to special software for
my classes when I can't get to the computing lab?
"Virtual Lab" allows you to use the
software available on the lab computers anytime with your own laptop
or home computer. Visit the
Virtual Lab page to download
the application.
How can I access my IFS file storage space?
Storing and accessing your files in your IFS space
is easy with mFile. Simply save your files in your
Private folder (or use the Public or Shared
folder for sharing files).
How can I share files and communicate with my
team members?
You and your team members could use email
to share files and communicate with each other, so be sure your
uniqname@umich.edu
email address is forwarding to an account you check regularly.
Also be certain you use your uniqname@umich.edu email address
in
My iMpact.
Please note that you cannot send attachments through the Student
Directory in iMpact.
If you use your ITCS email account, you
cannot send attachments that are over 2MB. To share large
files, store them in the Shared or Public folders in your IFS space
using
mFile.
Use our
Office Communications Server (OCS) with Live
Meeting to chat, share files
and conduct audio/video conferences.
You can create a Project Worksite in
CTools. Visit the Help topics
in CTools for instructions.
How can I connect to the Internet from home?

For
students living in University Housing, the University provides
high-speed Internet access in residence halls via
ResComp, and in Northwood
Apartments via the
Northwood DSL Network Service.
Students
who live in group houses or in private residences can obtain
high-speed Internet access through any of a number of commercially
available
Internet service providers.
For a description of high-speed options, see
High-Speed Internet Service Options at Your
Residence.
If
high-speed Internet access is not an option at your residence,
another alternative is a commercially provided dial-in Internet
service, the most basic means of Internet access available.
Can I use wireless at home?
If you have invested in a wireless card for the Business School wireless network, you may wish to setup a
wireless network at home. Many companies make home wireless access points that will work with the same wireless card that you use at the Business School. You can then roam with an internet connection on your laptop around your house and yard.
Be sure to purchase a home system that
is compatible with the 802.11a/b/g standard.
