Using Computer Labs and
Workstations
Can I store files on the lab computers?
While files can be saved and downloaded
into a Temp folder on the lab computer, these files will be deleted
as soon as you log out. Use a portable storage device or store
your files in your IFS space using
mFile.
How do I access files from my professor?
Professors can share files with
students in the R:\Courses network folder. The lab computers
throughout the Business School are already able to access this
folder. This folder can be accessed on your laptop and from
off campus through the internet using ftp. The files and
folders in R:\Courses are read-only - students cannot save or
modify files in this network location.
Many Business School courses have
worksites in
CTools, a course communication and management web tool
offered through the University of Michigan. Professors can
post announcements and additional documents on CTools.
How do I access and store files in my University IFS space?
You can access your IFS space using an
ftp software called
Secure Shell. Visit ITCS's
website for more information and to download the file.
However, the easiest way to store and
access files in your IFS space is through
mFile
using an internet browser. With mFile, you can upload and
download your files, organize them into folders, and even share
files with your team members. mFile does not require any
special software and can be accessed from any computer.
Complete
instructions on using mFile can be
found at ITCS.
What storage devices can I use?
USB drives (popularly called Flash
drives or thumb drives) are an affordable and convenient way to
transport and share files. The lab workstations all have easy
access USB ports on the front of the machine. Students can purchase USB drives
through the
UM
Computer Showcase.
How do I access my University email?
You can access mail in your
University
email account through the internet. Simply login
with your uniqname and password.
You can also use a third-party email
client to access your University email. The
ITCS website contains easy-to-use
documentation on configuring a number of different email software
applications. For further assistance, you can contact ITCS at
(734) 647-HELP.
