Tips for Traveling
The key to success in traveling is planning ahead.
Computing Services can work with you to make sure your travel
arrangements go smoothly.
Are there cameras available for me to
borrow?
Computing Services has both Digital
Cameras and Digital Video Cameras available for loan to students.
You can also borrow a tripod and/or a firewire card and cable for
capturing video to your laptop. Contact the
Computing Services department to
reserve equipment. Be sure to specify when you need the
equipment and for how long.
Can I borrow a laptop?
Laptops are not available for loan to
students. If you are having difficulties with your laptop,
bring it to the
Laptop Support team in the Kresge
Library.
How will I be able to access the Internet
while I am traveling?
Many hotels around the world offer a
variety of internet/network connection options. Contact the
hotel you will be staying at and ask them what type of connection
they offer. Email that information to
Computing Services so can assist
you with any adaptors, cards or cables you may need.
If you are traveling to a location with
Ethernet and/or Wireless access, you may need to configure the card
driver according to the specifications of your host environment.
To avoid conflict with Business School settings, you may want to set
up a second profile for your host's network.
Ethernet settings are rarely an issue
since they are typically broadcast and received automatically.
However, wireless setup sometimes requires specific configuration
information. Our laptop support team can assist you if you
have the settings in advance, otherwise you will need to obtain the
assistance of your host's IT staff once you arrive.
Can I setup dialin access while traveling?
If you will be needing Internet access
during your travels, many hotels and motels now offer free or low
cost Internet access to guests. Internet access is also widely
available in coffee shops, bookstores, and other public
establishments.
Some Internet Service Providers include
800 or local numbers for subscribers to use while they are
traveling, so you should find out if this option is available to you
if you choose an ISP for personal connectivity.
Can I borrow power adaptors for international travel?
Power and telephone adaptors for many different
countries are available for loan. Email
Computing Services with the country
and travel dates.
How can I access my email and my
IFS file storage space?
You can easily access your email
from any computer with internet connection through
www.mail.umich.edu. Login with your uniqname and
University password.
Use
mFile to store and access your
files in your IFS space using your internet browser.

How can I meet with my team if we are not traveling together?
