Should I buy a laptop or just use the
computing labs?
While there are many workstations
available throughout the complex and in the labs, there will be
times that a computer will not be available. The computing labs
will not be able to meet all of your needs. Purchasing a
laptop will guarantee you have the resources you need. You can
even access the
software on the lab stations by using
Virtual Lab.
What type of laptop should I buy?
Computing Services arranges
discounts each year from two
leading laptop manufacturers on systems that meet all of our
recommendations. If you find a different system, or already
have a laptop, take a look at our
specifications to make sure the
laptop will meet your needs.
Does Ross have resources I can use with a SmartPhone?
With your SmartPhone, you can reserve
group study rooms, view your appointments and recruiting activities,
and more. Connect your SmartPhone to
www.bus.umich.edu/mobile to get started.

Should I get a Blackberry and can I get
support?
Blackberry devices can be very useful,
however they may not work well with your ITCS email account.
To take full advantage of the features of a Blackberry, you need to
connect via a Blackberry Enterprise Services (BES).
For more information and documentation, visit the
Blackberry website.
MBA students can connect their Exchange
account to a Blackberry device or Gmail account. For more
information and instructions, visit our
Email Services page.
Would an iPod be a useful tool?
With Ross on iTunes U, you can download
podcasts of news, events and seminars, and watch or listen to them
when it is convenient for you. You can view them on your
computer, or save them to an iPod to take them with you. While
an iPod is not necessary to view and/or listen to podcasts, it can
be very convenient to be able to take your podcasts to view
anywhere, anytime. Visit the
Support for Ross on iTunes U page
for more information, with a link to purchase your own iPod at a
discount through the Computer Showcase.
Can I get a discount on purchasing a PDA?
The
UM
Computer Showcase offers discounts
to students on a selection of
PDAs. Visit their website for
prices and selections.
What file storage devices can I use?
USB drives (popularly called Flash
drives or thumb drives) are an affordable and convenient way to
transport and share files. The lab workstations all have easy
access USB ports on the front of the machine. Students can purchase
USB drives
through the
UM
Computer Showcase.
If you have your own laptop, you may
also consider investing in a CD burner. Recordable CDs are
inexpensive and can typically store 700MB of data.
