Keeping Your Computer Secure
How can I keep my computer safe from viruses?

free to the university community. VirusScan version 8 provides
protection from Virus and Trojans. It also provides some protection
from Adware/Spyware worms and hackers. Visit ITCS's
Virus Busters page to download this auto-updating version
of VirusScan and learn how you can protect yourself from viruses.
How can I protect my computer from spyware and
adware?
Visit ITCS's
Security Recommendations page for
information on removing and protecting against spyware and adware on
your computer.
Does the University offer any tools to help me
control spam email?
Nothing is more annoying than having to
sift through spam to find the email that is important to you.
ITCS has a group dedicated to helping you keep spam under control.
Visit ITCS's
Spam Busters page to see what tips
and tools are available to keep spam out of your Inbox.
Where can I find tips to help me keep my
computer safe?
Especially in a networked environment
and with the use of email, keeping your computer secure is
imperative, not just for you but for your colleagues as well.
ITCS Virus Busters has compiled a
list of tips to keep your computer
secure.
Ross has also prepared a
security webpage with
helpful tips and links to assist you with keeping your computer
safe.
How can I change my University password?
You can change your UMICH Kerberos
password on the web at
accounts.itcs.umich.edu/kpasswd.
A link to this page can also be found at
weblogin.umich.edu.
To protect your privacy and security,
we recommend that you change your UMICH Kerberos password once every
six months. Why not change your password when you change your clocks
for Daylight Saving Time?
We have found that the most secure passwords are long phrases with a
few caps and non-alphanumeric characters. You might use something
like – I bet you can’t guess this password! (But don’t copy this
one). For help selecting a secure password, see
Choosing and Changing a Secure UMICH Password
(R1162).
Where can I store my files to keep them
private and safe?
Your IFS space is backed up by ITCS, so
you never have to worry about losing all of your files. The
most secure location to save your files is in the Private folder in
your IFS storage space, which you can access over the internet
through
mfile.

Should I keep backup copies of my files?
Digital data can easily be corrupted
and lost - don't ever keep just one copy of a file if it is
important. For smaller files you can use a USB memory key,
burn them to a CD, or store a copy in your IFS space.
Use an external hard drive to keep a full backup of your system.
