Understanding Your Login
What is a "uniqname"?
A uniqname is a campus-wide login user
I.D., which you use to login to all University resources, including
your University supplied email account and email address.
Accessing
web resources will also require a password. This
password is known by many names (uniqname password, kerberos
password, University password, ITCS password) but is essentially the
password that is associated with your uniqname for login to all
secure resources associated with the University of Michigan,
including those specific to Ross.
Your uniqname login is managed by ITCS
Accounts Office (764-8000). Depending on how and when your
account was created, our Computing Services staff may be able to
assist you with login issues or can help you work with ITCS to
correct the problem. Please note you may need to resolve some
issues in person at the Accounts Office in the Michigan Union.
What is the difference between my Kerberos and
University passwords?
Upon admission you will be sent a
temporary University ID so you can begin taking advantage of many of
the web resources offered exclusively at the Ross School of
Business through the
My iMpact web portal.

Once your enrollment deposit is
received, you will be sent a confirmation with a One Time ID (OTID)
and instructions. You will need both your UM ID and this OTID
to create your uniqname and set your University password. Once
this process is completed, you will have access to the full range of
services offered in your
Basic Computing Package
through ITCS.
When selecting a password, use at least
six characters with symbols and numbers and avoid anything that can
easily be guessed, such as dictionary words, dates, family/pet
names, etc. Visit ITCS webpage for recommended guidelines in
creating a secure password.
If you are returning to the University
of Michigan, it is important to complete this process to reactivate
the services associated with your existing uniqname.
What resources can I access with my
uniqname login?
Information Technology Central Services
offers each student a
Basic Computing Package.
Your uniqname login provides you web access to many of these
services plus more:
Your uniqname login also gives you
access to various resources at Ross:
These
services are available to you as long as you are an active student
in the University.
Where can I find easy access to all of my login services?
The
University of Michigan has compiled a
webpage with a list of the various
services that are part of your
Basic Computing Package and can be
accessed with your uniqname login.
What policies and guidelines do I need to follow when using University technology?
All University of Michigan technology
users should be aware that by using University equipment they are
implicitly bound by certain rules and
policies which were agreed upon by obtaining a uniqname
login. These rules include a high code of ethics when using
University equipment:
|
 |
Do not use your University email
address or account to send span or chain email |
|
 |
Do not use your University
email address or personal webpage for solicitation and
profit |
|
 |
Respect software licensing and
compliance agreements |
 |
Do not download illegal music
or video |
|
 |
Respect the privacy of other
users |
|
 |
Do not tamper with equipment |
|
 |
Do not do anything that
interferes with the intended use of
University information resources |
Consequences for violation of these
agreements could be severe!
Can I keep any of these resources after I graduate?
Your uniqname is yours for life, you
just need to update which email account your uniqname directs mail
to. Keep your email forwarding instructions
up-to-date in the UM Online Directory.
Login services, including CTools, your email accounts and IFS
storage are available as long as you are listed as "Active in
Program", which is approximately 30 days after graduation. If
you wish to maintain access to any of these services, such as email
and IFS space, you can purchase them through
UM Online.
How do I change my University/Kerberos password?
A direct link to update your password is available on the
weblogin page, which lists the various services that are part of your
Basic Computing Package. You will need to login with your current password.
When selecting a new password, use at least
six characters with symbols and numbers and avoid anything that can
easily be guessed, such as dictionary words, dates, family/pet
names, etc. Visit ITCS webpage for recommended guidelines in
creating a secure password.
Are there any orientation sessions or other
information to help me understand my computing resources?

introduce our incoming students to Ross computing resources and
assist with laptop purchasing and configuration. Sessions will
also be offered for Winter incoming students. Self-help
information and links, and Q&A and presentation schedules are
available at the
