Ross Computing Labs
Where are the computer labs at Ross?
We have standard computing
labs on the bottom floor of the Electronic Resources building and
the Courtyard Lab in the hallway outside of the labs, as well as
workstations on the
second floor within the Kresge Library, in the Student Lounge and in
various locations throughout the Business School complex.
Online maps are available at entry
kiosks and My iMpact.
Our Commerce Park facility in Dearborn
offers the same wireless access and lab software as the Ann Arbor
campus, and is available primarily for our Evening MBA students.
The software available on lab computers
is also available for use on your own desktop computer or laptop by
using our
Virtual Lab, which is available 24
hours a day.
A Multimedia Lab on the
fourth floor of the Kresge Building within the Library contains workstations equipped with specialized software and
equipment for creating and editing video for use in presentations.
To learn more and to reserve a workstation, visit the
Multimedia lab page.
What hours are the labs available?
Workstations within
the Library, including the Multimedia Lab, are available during regular
Library hours. Workstations
within the computing labs are available during
lab hours. All other
workstations are available whenever the buildings are open.
Our
Virtual Lab is available 24 hours a
day and gives you access to all software available on lab computers.
Are there maps to help me find the Business School computer labs?
Maps of the Ross School of Business
complex can be found in stairwells and near exterior doors in each
building. Kiosks are stationed near main entrances with maps,
daily events and contact information for faculty and staff.
Online maps are also available in
My iMpact.
What software and equipment are available in
the labs?
All computer
workstations run Windows Vista with the Office 2007 Suite as well as
specialized software - visit the
software page for a list of
available software. These workstations have optical mice,
sound cards (please provide your own headphones) and CD-Rom drives.
Printers with scanning capability are
located in each lab, and in locations throughout the School of
Business. Color printers and color scanners are available in
the computer labs.
The software available on lab computers
is also available for use on your own desktop computer or laptop by
using our
Virtual Lab, which is available 24
hours a day.
Where is the Multimedia Lab and when can I use it?
The Multimedia Lab is located on the
fourth floor of the Kresge Building within the Library. This
lab contains workstations equipped with specialized software and
equipment for creating and editing video for use in presentations.
Workstations are reserved through the
Student Room Reservation system.
The Multimedia Lab is subject to
Library hours and will only be
unlocked during reservations. To learn more and to reserve a workstation, visit the
Multimedia lab page.
Please note the Multimedia Workstations
do not have internet connection.
How can I get access to special software
needed for my classes?
Any
special software needed for your
classes will be loaded on the workstations available in the
computing labs, library and throughout the Business School complex.
If you cannot make it to campus or wish
to use your own computer,
"Virtual Lab" allows you to use the software available on the lab
computers anytime with your own laptop or home computer. Visit the
Virtual Lab page to download the
application.

Are there computers available at the Commerce Park facility?
Our Commerce Park facility in Dearborn
offers the same wireless access and lab software as the Ann Arbor
campus, and is available primarily for our Evening MBA students.
How can I access my IFS file storage space
from a lab computer?
All
computer workstations have Secure Shell installed, a secure ftp
program for accessing your IFS space.
You can also
access your IFS space on any computer
with an internet connection by using
mFile. mFile is a web-based
interface connected to your IFS storage space.

Do I even need a laptop with the computer labs available?
A laptop computer is as much a part of
the graduate programs as textbooks and course packs.
MBA and PhD graduate students attending
the University of Michigan Business School are expected to own a
laptop computer. BBA students may benefit from a laptop and can
take advantage of the services, but are not expected to own one.
There are definite advantages to having
a laptop at Ross:
 |
Most
courses use web-based UM
CTools for instruction and
support. |
 |
Our
mobile computing environment provides
wireless Internet
access,
virtual lab software, and
printing for laptop users
from anywhere in the school. |
 |
The
school provides
facilities to complement student laptops.
|
 |
Our
computing labs have limited availability, especially during
peak usage times and near midterm and final exams.
Therefore, the labs may not meet all of your computing
needs. |
