Recommended Materials for Class
Can I use my laptop in class?
Our wireless network provides Internet
access for laptops in all classrooms and group study rooms.
For assistance in configuring your wireless connection, visit the
Laptop Support team in the Kresge
Library.
In addition, all major classrooms have
Ethernet and power connections - connections are in the desks in
tiered classrooms and in the floors in flat classrooms. You
may borrow an Ethernet card from the
Library Circulation Desk for 2
hours with a valid MCard. Please
provide your own Ethernet cable.
Please observe the following courtesies
when using your laptop in the classroom:
|
 |
Check with your professors on their preferences and
guidelines for your laptop use within their class. This
will vary from professor to professor and from class to
class. |
 |
While class is in session, pay your professors respect by
giving them your full attention - don't surf the web or read
e-mail during class. |
How do I get the Course Packet for my class?
Courses that have required or optional
course material packets will have an announcement posted in
respective
CTools sites with instructions on
how to order the packet and delivery/pickup options. This
announcement is posted approximately 2 weeks before the course
begins.
CTools sites that do not have a course
material announcement posted either do not have a packet or a packet
has not been turned in to the curriculum services team for
processing. Please check with the instructor teaching the course or
the syllabus to see if a course material packet will be forthcoming.
What is a Face Card and how do I produce one for my professor?
Face Cards are used by many faculty to
help facilitate classroom management. Since such a large
number of faculty require Face Cards, it is best that you be
prepared to bring one with you to class. Make certain you have
a current photo in your
My iMpact profile, then go to the Face Card
link, fill in the pertinent fields, and click Submit. You will
then have a page of Face Cards to print and separate.

Where do I get a Name Tent for class?
The Office of Student Life provides all
new students two name tents at the start of the year. These name
tents are to be used during your entire time at Ross. If you did not
receive one, or if you misplaced yours, pick up cardstock paper from
the Kresge Library front desk and download the
Name Tent Template. Simply
fill in your name in the fields and print it out on any of the lab
computers.
How will my professor share documents with me?
Your professor may simply email the
files to students, so be sure your uniqname@umich.edu email
address is forwarding to an account you check regularly.
Also be certain your email address is correct in
My iMpact.
When emailing files back to your
professor, be aware that you cannot send attachments over 2MB in
size through the University email system.
Professors can share files with
students in the R:\Courses network folder. The lab computers
throughout the Business School are already able to access this
folder. This folder can be accessed on your laptop and from
off campus through the internet using ftp. The files and
folders in R:\Courses are read-only - students cannot save or
modify files in this network location.
Many Business School courses have
worksites in
CTools, a course communication and management web tool
offered through the University of Michigan. Professors can
post announcements and additional documents on CTools.
