Content is organized topically
into 14 modules to form the heart of the Core Knowledge program.
These Core Knowledge topics were
suggested at a school wide brain storming session in October,
2002. In addition, Helpdesk and Computing Staff, Kresge Library
and Information Support Staff contributed to the topic selection
and development. Topics were categorized into the following
"foundational" (red) and "Active Business School
Community" (blue) modules. Power User (gold) topics
within each category are not considered core for all users, but
rather are presented as useful skills to develop in relation to
the topic.
What We Believe You
Already Know
This module establishes a starting point for the topics covered in
this program. It provides a list of basic skills for Windows, the Internet, and MS Office.
References to free web
based learning modules and local classes to learn these skills if
necessary are linked from this site.
Getting Help and Finding
Information
This module provides an overview of Business School IT
Services, and how to find and manage contact information using the
campus and Business School Directory tools. Power User
topics include Relationship Management using the UMBS database for
checking individual and company relationships to the Business
School, and how to approach scheduling events.
Managing Your Accounts
This module covers Staff and Faculty basic campus and Business School
computing packages and related Logins and Passwords, quotas, and
policies.
Protecting Yourself and
Your Work
This module discusses password security, Anti-Virus Practices,
and backups.
Managing Your Files
This module clarifies network drive navigation as well as provides file tips
and instructions on how to create PDFs and how to zip and unzip
files. Power User topics include zipping files, using
off-line files, FTP remote file access, and preparing for an
upgrade.
Using B-School
Equipment
This module provides instructions for using networked
printers, including adding another network printer and changing
printer properties, using Kiosks, and where to get Color
prints. Power User topics include using Scanners, E-Beams
and Smart Boards.
Using Our E-Mail
System
This module covers basics in using Outlook software,
including the Meeting Tool, Out of Office Wizard, Archiving.
It also covers mail delivery forwarding with the Online Directory.
Power User topics include Webmail and Outlook for remote access,
profile creation and setting preferences.
Accessing the
Internet
This module discusses modem dial-in, Ethernet and our
wireless network use.
Using Classrooms and
Labs
This module covers using classroom and lab computers as
labguest or logging in with your personal login, how to reserving the
instructional lab, ensure classroom equipment is functional,
request software for the lab or classroom, how to reserve and
operate classroom equipment, and where to get help.
Making the Most of
the Kresge eLibrary
The eLibrary module provides an overview of finding books within
the various online University catalogs, journals, Working Papers,
databases, and getting help when off campus.
eCourse Materials
for Faculty and Secretaries
This module provides information on
CourseTools, Course Materials, Messaging Students for Faculty and
Secretaries. Please note this content is not considered
"core" for administrative staff with unrelated responsibilities,
but it is still beneficial to have a general awareness of these
Business School features.
Getting Your Word
Out
This module discusses ways to disseminate information using
e-mail groups, preparing posters and printed materials.
Power User topic include how to create a web page and manage a
site on the Webuser server.
Working at Home
or Off Site
This module covers Internet connectivity options, introduces Webmail\Outlook
Remote Access for mail access and FTP for file access with a focus
on home use.
Traveler's Skill
Pack
This module for travelers provides a checklist and planning tips, and
covers Internet access issues, using Webmail\Outlook Remote Access
for mail access and FTP for file access with a focus on traveling.
