Using Network Printers

When you wish to print, it is useful to change and add printers and set properties as necessary. If your regular printer is tied up or off line, these skills can be a life saver.
You can print to any networked printer in the school. It is also useful to have basic skills such as knowing how to set printer properties for single and double-sided printing, knowing where to get supplies and how to perform basic maintenance.
Printing to other printers: You will want set up your computer to access at least two network printers. Typically this is set up in advance for you by the Helpdesk. However, it is useful to know how to add additional printers on your own in case you find yourself in a situation where you need to print and your default printer is not available, either off line, out of service, or tied up with another large job. You will need to select another printer. Instead of using your Printing Icon on the toolbar, choose the File menu - Print dialog box, and click on the drop down arrow to select another printer installed on your computer.
To add an additional printer, go to Start - Find (or Search) - for Printers. Select or enter the BUS domain. Click on the Location heading bar to sort by location, then scroll through the list looking for printers by desired location. When you see a printer you want, double click on it. Windows 95/98 users will be prompted with a wizard - follow the prompts. This will add this printer, which you can select from the Print dialog drop down box.
To change your default printer, go to Start - Settings - Printers to open the Printer folder. Right click on the printer that you wish to make your default, and click on "Set as Default."
To change Printer Properties from single sided to double sided "duplex" printing, choose File - Print. In the Print dialog box first select the desired printer, then click on the Properties button. Depending on the printer driver, somewhere will be an option to "flip on long edge," which is the standard orientation to print like a page in a book. Select "None" to revert to single-sided printing. As of March, 2002 all new printer drivers default to double-sided printing.
To Fill Paper Trays: Be sure to familiarize yourself with your printer. Paper can be requested from Computing Services receptionist. Send e-mail requests to computingsupplies@bus.umich.edu.
To Change Toner: Occasionally, printers need toner cartridges replaced. Replacement cartridges can be requested from Computing Services receptionist. Return your used cartridge to Computing Services for recycling credit. Send e-mail requests to computingsupplies@bus.umich.edu.
Clearing Jams: Familiarize yourself with your default printer. Jams are most frequently from duplexing units, or from paper that was not straightly placed in the tray or has a higher moisture content (usually paper that has been sitting around a while opened, or exposed to high humidity.)
Guidelines: Call the Helpdesk if you need assistance.
Color Printing
When you need color printing or copies, you have options.
-
There are several color printers around the school. You can add these printers as described above, and print directly to them.
-
Contact Multi-Media services and they can arrange a color print out for you. You will need to provide an account number and the file.
-
You can go to the lab and print from a lab computer to the Lab color printer. You will need to provide an account number to a student lab assistant and request they open the queue for the color printer.
-
You can go to Kinkos or another external vendor.
Guidelines: You will need an account number to print to a lab color printer.
Using Kiosks
There are two types of kiosks placed around the school:
-
Entry Way Kiosks: These touch screen monitors in the entry areas of Hale, Davidson, and Kresge buildings provide a map, access to the Faculty/Staff directory for office room and phone numbers, and a listing of public events and room numbers in Today at the Business School.
-
The second type of kiosk is a computer set up for web and email access in the lounge and hallways, intended primarily for students, but also useful to faculty and staff for quick web access or to check their mail using Webmail.

Scanning Basics
It is useful to be able to take photos, magazine articles and other hard copy materials and digitize them on a scanner for use on your computer.
The Business School provides scanning stations on mobile carts in the faculty areas, as well as a scanner in the Student lab. You can scan pictures, text, or create a PDF file directly from a paper copy with these stations.
If you have more than one page to scan, load them into the document feeder. There are blue laminated cards with each station that walk you though how to load the pre-determined settings for optimal quality - follow these steps exactly. You will want a floppy disk, or most likely, a zip disk handy to transport the scanned file to your computer.
