Ethernet Basics
The Business School uses Ethernet wiring to connect office, lab and classroom computers. Users may need to be familiar with Ethernet basics to understand announcements sent from our office.
To connect to our Local Area Network for Internet, file server, and email connections, you
will need an Ethernet card. A cable plugs from your laptop card into an Ethernet jack.
Ethernet Jacks: Similar to a phone jack but slightly larger.
Ethernet jacks are available in faculty and staff offices, for all classroom
computers, and at student seating in some of the Davidson Hall major classrooms,
Hale Auditorium and in student study areas.
Ethernet Cables: An Ethernet cable plugs into the Ethernet card on the back on your computer and into a wired Ethernet jack near your computer.
Ethernet Wiring and Switches: The Business School uses a hybrid star/bus topology in a switched networking environment with Cat3 and Cat5 Ethernet delivering 10MB and 100MB speeds, with capability for 1GB delivery.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Service: An IP address, a computer's unique identifier on the Internet, is required for Internet access. The Business School has a pool of IP addresses from the University of Michigan that are assigned dynamically to workstations and laptops upon request.
More information on Business School services is in the
Network - Ethernet page in the
Technology site.
Our Wireless Network
The Business School maintains a 802.11a/b/g wireless network with coverage throughout our whole complex.
With a wireless card in your laptop, you can move through the halls with your laptop connected to the Internet, from office to lounge to library to classroom to courtyard. This service is very popular with our students, and is also available to our faculty and staff with laptops. The library reserve desk has cards available for loan if you wish to try it out before purchasing a card.
To access our network our network name must be entered in your card driver, and
your wireless card will need to be registered via our online web form. More
information and setup instructions are linked at the site below. Some
steps, such as registration and accessing the encryption key, will require your Kerberos login. The Helpdesk can assist you with setup if you wish.
For more information, see the Network
section in the Technology site.

How to Add a Dial-In Phone Number
You may need to add a dial-in phone number when traveling to another location in Michigan.
To add a number for another location:
-
Locate the number you need. See the
Network - Remote Access page in the Technology site for links to current lists of numbers.
-
Create a new dial-up icon with the number and desired properties. For example, in Windows 2000 choose Start - Settings - Network and Dialup Connections. Double-click on the icon to Make New Connection and follow the wizard.
Instead of adding another number, if you need just a one-time or short-term connection, you may find it more convenient to dial into your regular number long distance by simply changing your session properties to add a 1 and the area code if necessary.
