Q: Where is "OCD"?
A: OCD Stands for the Office of Career Development and is
located in K2336 within Kresge Library on the second floor. The office is open
from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday.
Q: How do I contact OCD with a
question?
A: The best way to contact OCD is
through email. General student inquiries should be directed to
rosscareercenter@umich.edu.
You can also call the office at (734) 764-1372 during regular office hours.
Q: What is the difference between
the "OCD-Recruiter Relations Management team" and the "OCD-Career Counseling
Center"?
A: OCD has two main functions:
student career education and managing on-campus career opportunities. The Career
Counseling Center (CCC) handles general student inquiries about the recruiting
process as well as provide workshops and counseling services. The Recruiter
Relations Management team (RRM) manages on-campus recruiter events, job
postings, and interviewing.
Q: How do I schedule a career counseling appointment?
A: Go to the follow link (http://www.bus.umich.edu/CounselingCalendar/CareerCenter/CareerCounseling.asp)
and select the type of counseling appointment you want. Then use the drop-down
menus to select an appointment by function, industry or counselor. After you
select an appointment, you will receive a confirmation email from the system to
confirm your appointment.
Q: How Many appointments can I schedule?
A: Students are permitted to
schedule one appointment through the iMpact system per week. Because of the
limited counseling availability, this policy is needed in order to allow the
maximum number of students to have access to career counseling resources.
Q: How do I cancel an existing appointment?
A: Go to the follow link (http://www.bus.umich.edu/CounselingCalendar/CareerCenter/CareerCounseling.asp)
and select “View Your Appointments” near the top of the page. In the field
called “Date and Time” there is a link that you can select to cancel the
appointment. You must cancel the appointment by noon the day before the
appointment in order to avoid being assessed a “no-show”.
Q: What if I miss my counseling appointment?
A: Your will be notified by the OCD - Career Counseling Center. You are
allowed to miss two counseling appointments per school year. After missing two,
you will be restricted to walk-in appointmnets only.
Q: Are there "walk-in" appointment times?
A: Yes, you can sign up for walk-in times by going to the career center and
sign up for available slots posted at the front desk. Walk-in slots are
posted daily and are filled on a first-come first-serve basis.
Q: What if I’m not able to attend an OCD Workshop?
A: The slides of workshops are
available on iMpact (http://www.bus.umich.edu/StudentCareerServices/JobSearchResources/HandoutsResources/WorkshopsPresentations.htm)
and some workshops are digitally recorded and available for online viewing.
Q: How can I find out what workshops are occurring and when?
A: OCD events are always posted on
the iMpact
( http://www.bus.umich.edu/StudentCareerServices/OcdEvents/) as well as
being advertised via e-mail, the Monroe Street Journal (MSJ).
Q: How can I find out when and where a company will be presenting on-campus?
A: Corporate events will be listed
on iMpact (http://www.bus.umich.edu/StudentCareerServices/OcdEvents/). The
“Company Events” button will take you to the events sponsored by OCD. You will
also want to select the “Clubs and Events” button because recruiting events
sponsored by clubs will show up here. Be sure to also check the Monroe Street
Journal each week for a listing of weekly events.
Q: What should I wear to corporate presentations and "Meet the Companies" events?
A: Remember that you are a
representative of Michigan at these events. Most presentations are business
casual unless advertised specifically. Jeans and sneakers are never acceptable.
Before attending an event, always be sure to turn off all your electronic
equipment: cell phones, PDAs and laptops.
Q: I have a meeting before/after a corporate presentation, is it okay to
attend part of the session or stop by after?
A: Make every effort to be on-time for all presentations. If you MUST arrive
late or leave early, position yourself quietly next to a door and do not cause a
disturbance by walking in in the middle of a presentation. Many companies will
host receptions after the presentation to continue conversation with attendees.
If you did not attend the presentation, refrain from dropping in for a ‘free
dinner’.
Q: What preparation is required of me before a corporate presentation?
A: Do some homework on the company that is presenting. During the Q&A
session, be prepared with some relevant questions. Ask only questions which
would benefit the group as a whole rather than specific questions relating to
your circumstances. Most companies hold a reception after their presentation
where you will be able to talk with recruiters one-on-one and ask more
individual questions.
