Welcome, Jeff DeGraff "Leading Innovation in Troubled
Times"
Room 1210

When things are tough all around, innovation isn’t your best friend; it’s your only friend. Making things better and new is the name of the growth game. But how do you jump-start your firm when money is scarce, morale is low, and time is short? Professor DeGraff will introduce you to a revolutionary way to get more innovation out of what you already have. Connect the dots between your strategy, your competencies, your innovation playbook, and, ultimately, your people. He will spell out which enterprise innovation practices work in troubling times and how to get everyone everywhere to make innovation happen every day.

11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Gautam Ahuja "Strategic Perspectives for Negotiating
Business Downturns"
Room 1210

When faced with an economic contraction and the associated downturn in your business, you must step back to adopt a strategic perspective and then take focused action. But how do you start, how do you get it right, and how do you execute? In this session with Professor Ahuja, you will learn an effective process for navigating through and beyond the downturn. It starts with triage: Assess and diagnose the situation so you can “stop the bleeding.” Next, enter the strategy rebuilding phase: Recognize the threats the downturn poses to your strategy, and develop a set of actions to counter them. Finally, look to the future through strategic repositioning: Occupy the most effective market position through a variety of strategic actions that exploit emerging opportunities.

Robert Quinn "Deep Change: Finding Your Orientation
in a Crisis and Beyond"
Room 1210

When crisis calls, the most powerful leaders do not base their actions on platitudes and past successes but rather on their deepest values and instincts. They enter into what Professor Quinn calls the “fundamental state of leadership” to create the deep change necessary to lead their organizations through complexity and into a meaningful future. In this session, you will explore how to tap into that capability by shifting along four dimensions: from comfort-centered to results-centered, from externally directed to internally directed, from self-focused to other-focused, and from internally closed to externally open. You will discover the actions associated with each of these dimension shifts and how they yield high-performance outcomes for you and your organization.
