Resilience

The Resilience microcommunity is a burgeoning group of scholars interested in learning more about resilience in organizations. Scholars in the group are studying what resilience looks like in organizations, how resilience functions at various levels of analysis (individual, group, organizational), what factors enable or inhibit resilience, and what difference resilience makes to various outcomes.

The Resilience microcommunity emerged from the 2003 POS conference after a working session on resilience. The 2005 Resilience Conference was held at the University of Michigan where approximately 40 professors and doctoral students gathered to share their research and gain a better understanding of resilience. A touchstone of the conference was a presentation on the B&O Railroad Museum and its recovery after a roof collapse, which was analyzed by Karl Weick.

There were various sessions on resilience presented at the 2006 Academy of Management meeting, including a PDW on resilience. In preparation for the PDW, attendees submitted resilience articles, books, measures, scales, teaching resources and other materials. We are constantly looking for additional resilience resources, so please send them along.

At the 2006 POS conference, scholars again came together to discuss resilience in one of the exciting research streams at the conference. New research relationships in the POD continue to blossom and we encourage scholars who are interested in resilience to send their information to us. Additional formal and informal gatherings are expected in the coming months and years.
