My colleague and I
believe that a more
holistic model of
the stress response
should include both
eustress and
distress. Our
approach has been to
operationally define
eustress as a
positive
psychological
response to a
stressor, as
indicated by the
presence of positive
psychological
states. We have
examined a several
positive
psychological states
as indicators of
eustress, and we
believe that the
most promising is
hope.
State hope is the
belief that one has
both the will and
the way to ones
goals at work. Our
preliminary research
has shown a strong
relationship between
hope and health in
samples of both
hospital nurses and
pastors two
occupations that
involve significant
emotional labor. Our
preliminary studies
have also found that
the nature of work
and the nature of
supervision have a
significant impact
on the development
of hope in workers.
