My research generally focuses on the effects of stress on emotional and cognitive
functioning in managerial and organizational life and on stigma and its psychological
and physiological consequences.
Work on Positive Organizational Scholarship
My interest in positive organizational scholarship centers around the concept of resilience,
specifically the psychological and physiological markers of resilience. To elaborate on this,
one of the theories underlying psychophysiological research is that individuals can have
one of two different responses to a given stressful situation depending on their appraisal
or evaluation of the situation and their personal coping resources. The first response is
an avoidance or threat orientation; the second is an approach or challenge orientation.
While the threat orientation can be considered a maladaptive and non-resilient stress
profile, the challenge orientation can be considered a resilient or adaptive stress profile.
My research examines these two stress profiles and the associated psychological and
physiological (specifically, hormonal and cardiovascular) markers of these profiles. In addition,
I am interested in exploring the implications of these profiles for individual and organizational
performance outcomes.
