Kresge Library Wins Top Service Award

An engraved silver platter from Tiffany and Co. will soon be on display in the Kresge Business Administration Library at the University of Michigan Business School. The platter and a certificate recognize Kresge Library as one of the winners of the second annual Center of Excellence Awards, presented by the Business & Finance Division of the Special Libraries Association (SLA), a 13,000-member national organization. The awards recognize quality in the successful management and delivery of information by academic and corporate libraries, which compete in three categories: technology, management and service.

At an awards ceremony held last month in New York City, a panel of judges presented Kresge Library with the Center of Excellence Award in Service based on its success in leveraging technology to help bring quality services to all its constituencies. Library Director Tomalee Doan, who has spearheaded Michigan’s transition from a traditional print library to an electronic library over the past three years, spoke to assembled SLA conference attendees about the best practices that helped Kresge clinch its first-place finish in the service category.

“We won because we were so complete in providing innovative services to all our constituencies---students, faculty, staff and alumni,” Doan said. “Throughout the year, we created new services targeting each of those groups.”

For example, the Library worked with faculty to determine the content for course materials and set up an online ordering and delivery system for students. Through a new faculty research service, Kresge librarians assist faculty with research projects for up to 20 hours. The Library also developed an online tutorial module to help incoming staff members learn at their own pace about the library resources available to them. In addition, Michigan is the leader among all academic libraries for providing free subscriber electronic resources for its alumni.

“Our most important objective as an eLibrary is to deliver services wherever you are and whenever you need them,” Doan said.

The other two winners of Center of Excellence Awards for 2003 were the Knowledge Network Group of Microsoft, in the technology category, and the Nike Design Library, in the management category.
