Ross School of Business Students Win First Place in Citigroup's Finance Case Competition

11/5/2004 --

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Four students from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan have claimed first place and $1,500 each in the first Finance Case Competition at the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) Annual Conference and Career Expo in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Michigan team of second-year MBA students Patrick Wakeham and Jose Roca and first-year students Alex Fry and Luis Gutarra competed with four other finalists (Arizona State, Babson College, Boston College and the University of Miami) in the Citigroup-sponsored event. The top five were selected over 15 other teams and judged by seven Citigroup executives from the Global Consumer Group Division.

Each team had only four hours to read, analyze and prepare a 15-minute presentation addressing an actual Citigroup finance issue.

"It was all about teamwork. I would say that we wouldn't have won if we hadn't worked effectively as a team, especially as we were putting our ideas and slides together under tough time constraints," Roca said.

Since its inception in 1988, NSHMBA has worked to foster Hispanic leadership through graduate management education and professional development. It's comprised of 29 chapters and 6,500 members in the United States and Puerto Rico.
