Multidisciplinary Action Projects (MAP) Program

  • What is MAP?
    Our action learning academic program

  • What students participate?
    All first year MBA students

  • How does it work?
    Teams of 4 to 6 students work on organizational projects

  • What type of projects?
    Multidisciplinary and challenging projects that focus on the design or development of an important business process or solution of a real business problem or opportunity

  • When do the projects take place?
    Early March through the end of April (7 weeks)

  • Are students at the company full-time?
    Students work both on and off the project site, very much like consultants

  • Are students taking other courses at this time?
    MAP is the only course required of students during this period of time

  • What involvement does faculty have?
    The faculty advisors guide the students in their analyses and recommendations. The faculty are selected from the following disciplines:· Business Communications· Computer and Information Systems· Finance· Managerial Accounting· Marketing· Operations Management· Organizational Behavior & HR Management· Statistics

  • How many MAP projects each year?
    Approximately 80 MAP projects will be undertaken this year

  • How can we apply to sponsor a project?
    Complete a project proposal form. Proposals are accepted from November 1, 2004 through December 23, 2004. Download the proposal from our website: www.bus.umich.edu/MAP

  • What are the requirements for a sponsoring organization?
    1. Appoint a dedicated liaison to the project
    2. Send the liaison to the Business School for Company Day January 21, 2005 (Domestic projects only).
    3. Provide a workplace for the students at the company and equipment to accomplish their work (phone, fax, computers, copy machine)
    4. Allow timely access to information and personnel.
    5. Reimburse student project-related expenses* Long distance projects must include travel expenses, hotel, meals & transportation. International MAP also includes an administrative fee.

  • What does it cost organizations to participate?
    Project-related expenses:
    Local companies spent $3,000 on average in 2004
    Long distance companies spent $18,000 on average in 2004
    International companies range from $25,000 to $50,000
