For Faculty: Working Paper Submission FAQ

Abstracts and full papers submitted to the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan Research Paper Series Journal are available at the Social Sciences Research Network (SSRN).The UM Library's Deep Blue repository also contains Ross faculty working papers from the late 1960s to the present.

Who can submit a paper?

Only Faculty teaching at the Ross School of Business can submit a paper to the Ross Faculty Working Paper Series. However, SSRN accepts submissions directly from authors regardless of institutional affiliation. Non-Ross Faculty should visit the SSRN FAQ site for additional information.

Where do I submit my paper?

Send an email with the paper attached to ssrnsubmit@umich.edu with SSRN Submission in the subject line

What format should my paper be in?

PDF format is the preferred format for submission.

What information do I need to send along with my paper?

  • Primary author's name, title, affiliation, and email
  • Primary author's department at Ross
  • Co-author(s) name, title, affiliation, and email
  • Working paper title
  • Working paper date
  • Working paper abstract (100-250 words)
  • Keywords (minimum of 3 required)
  • JEL area (optional)

None of the JEL codes provided by SSRN seem to fit my paper's topic. Are JEL codes mandatory?

No, JEL codes are not mandatory, although they make it easier for users at SSRN to find relevant papers. If you cannot find a code that matches the topic of your paper, you may leave off the JEL codes in your submission. Please let us know that you do not wish to use the JEL codes in your email.

I submitted my paper to directly to SSRN. How do I have it included in the Ross Working Paper Series?

Send an email to ssrnsubmit@umich.edu and let us know your name and the title of the paper you want incorporated into the Ross Series. The current version of the paper will be downloaded from SSRN and given a working paper number and Ross cover page. You will be notified by SSRN when the revision has been completed. Working papers will also be submitted to the permanent collection at Deep Blue, the University's digital repository.

My co-author submitted the paper to another institution's series at SSRN. Can it be included in the Ross series?

Yes. Send an email to ssrnsubmit@umich.edu and let us know your name and the title of the paper you want incorporated into the Ross Series. SSRN will create a combined cover page for the paper. We will update the abstract at SSRN to include the working paper number and place it in the correct topic area. You will be notified by SSRN when the revision has been completed. Working papers will also be submitted to the permanent collection at Deep Blue, the University's digital repository.

My co-author's institution already has a series at SSRN. Can my paper be a part of more than one working paper series at SSRN?

Yes. Papers that are a part of more than one series are given combined cover pages showing the dual series status.

If I post my paper to SSRN, can it still be published in a journal?

Yes. SSRN does not retain copyright on the papers that are submitted, only rights to distribute. Many papers that are in SSRN are also forthcoming in journals or already published. If you have a question about copyright for your paper, please let us know and we will work with the copyright specialists at SSRN to determine if your paper can be put into the collection.

I have a revision to my paper. How do I get it into SSRN?

Send an email to ssrnsubmit@umich.edu / Subject line: SSRN Revision. Attach the revised paper to the email. In the text of the email, include any changes to the author(s), title, abstract, keywords or JEL codes that are necessary. We will add the Ross cover page, update the abstract information at SSRN and upload the new version of the paper. You will be notified by SSRN when the revision has been completed. The revision will also be submitted to the permanent collection at Deep Blue, the University's digital repository.

I submitted my revision directly to SSRN instead of emailing it to ssrnsubmit@umich.edu, now what?

We are notified of any changes made to your working paper in the Ross series. Revised papers at SSRN will be updated with a Ross branded cover page and the new version will be uploaded to Deep Blue. You will receive a confirmation email from SSRN when these changes are complete.

If I revise my paper, will the URL for my paper change?

No. The URL for your paper at SSRN and in Deep Blue will stay the same.

The Ross Center or Institute that I belong to is not listed on the Ross page at SSRN. Can I still submit a paper?

We will be working with the Ross School of Business Centers and Institutes to create an easy way for their members to submit papers through us. If your Center or Institute is interested in having their papers become a part of the Ross Series at SSRN, please send us an email at ssrnsubmit@umich.edu.
