Language Study and Its Importance

Language acquisition enhances opportunities for communication and collaboration in an increasingly interconnected world. It also opens up possibilities, perspectives, and ideas unavailable in one's own native language. For business students in particular, learning a second language can set them apart in the competitive global business market.

We strongly encourage our students to learn another language or even two as a part of your electives coursework. We suggest planning ahead with an Academic Advisor based on your curriculum.

Language Resource Center
The Language Resource Center (LRC) supports faculty, staff, and students involved in the study of languages, literatures, and cultures at the University of Michigan. The LRC has a media library and diverse resources for students, faculty, and staff who wish to learn about a particular language or culture independently and outside of the classroom.

LS&A Language Departments
The University of Michigan School of Literature, Science, & the Arts (LSA) offers coursework in more than 65 languages, from Armenian to Yiddish, any of which has the potential to be a significant asset in the global business environment.

University of Michigan Summer Language Institute
Participate in intensive summer language courses in Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish.
