Announcement About the Center
Welcome
It is an honor to announce the creation of the Center
for Society & Economy of the University of Michigan Business School.
The proposal for the Center was made in response to Dean
White's Anniversary
Challenge. The purpose of this challenge is to expand the 75th anniversary
of the school from a commemorative event to one that includes real, substantial
actions, improvements, initiatives, and/or new ways of thinking that will
make a positive impact in the long term, but can be executed during the
75th anniversary timeframe. We are honored that idea for the Center was
accepted as one of the top twenty legacy gifts, and grateful for the institutional
and financial support given by the school.
The Center for Society & Economy is an interdisciplinary
research center. Its purpose is to support research, education, and policy
that combine sociology and economics. The Center for Society & Economy
facilitates the exchange of ideas, information, and resources among scholars
with this interdisciplinary focus, stimulates research on matters of both
theoretical and policy interest, assists the education of undergraduate
and graduate students, and disseminates key research findings to the business
and public policy communities.
Our first product is the POLICY NEWSLETTER.
Its purpose is to inform business and public policy through social science
research. Each issue of the POLICY NEWSLETTER is
devoted to a specific theme of contemporary and significant interest.
The inaugural issue,
cosponsored by the Center
for European Studies, is devoted to the topic of the euro, one of
the biggest economic and social experiments of recent times. Some of the
questions explored by the eight articles in this inaugural
issue include: To what extent does the euro signal an era of increasing
economic and social integration in Europe? What have the effects of the
currency been thus far, and what are its prospects for the future? And
what does monetary integration in Europe mean for businesses, investors,
and policymakers?
We look forward to developing more products and services
to promote interdisciplinary work in sociology and economics on matters
of importance to the academic, business, and public policy communities.
