Research Business Office

The critical importance of research to our central mission of creating and disseminating knowledge is reflected in:

  • Our teaching load
  • A liberal summer research funding policy for active researchers
  • A sabbatical policy that explicitly accounts for research productivity
  • Access to research assistants
  • An internal funding competition awarding seed money for selected research proposals.

We also encourage researchers to take advantage of the opportunities available at one of the world's leading research universities. These include not only facilities and other physical resources but also a rich array of human resources that can lead to creative and exciting interdisciplinary partnerships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Research FAQ

For Media Representatives

Q: Where can I find background information and statistics about the school?

A: The best place to find such information is on News Room Web page under the link "Fast Facts." It contains the mission and brief history of the Business School, along with enrollment numbers and other statistical information.

Q: What is the best way to locate a faculty expert to use as a source for my news story?

A: The fastest way to find a source would be to contact Bernie DeGroat, media relations officer for the Ross School, at (734) 936-1015 or bernied@umich.edu. An alternative method would be to log into iMpact and then search the Faculty profiles, which contain background and contact information for all Ross School faculty.

Research Computing (RC)

Research Computing at the Ross School is supported through the efforts of Paul Michaud and Susan Chang. The school supports a platform of Sun UNIX workstations providing a wide variety of research databases and statistical software. The statistical packages include SAS, SPSS, Splus, Limdep, MatLab, Gauss, RATS, plus several others. The databases include CRSP, Compustat Industrials, Global Vantage, TAQ, and a variety of others. Documentation for most of the statistical packages is available on 2-hour reserve at the Kresge Library.

Research Computing provides consultation in the following area:

  • Use of the UNIX operating system
  • Programming assistance for access to RC data bases
  • Programming assistance for use of RC statistical packages (SAS, etc.)
  • Statistical questions (ols, logistic reg, etc.)

Due to our limited personnel resources, the emphasis of our consultation is on training, i.e. it is used to enhance the skills of the research community, rather than provide a service that will undertake projects of the research community.

Assistance with SAS, SPSS, and Splus is also available from the Center for Statistical Consulting and Research (CSCAR) on the web at www.umich.edu/~cscar, by phone at 764-STAT, or via email at sas.help@umich.edu, spss.help@umich.edu and splus.help@umich.edu.

Paul Michaud can be reached at 763-5677, michaud@umich.edu.
