Domestic Corps
Students
If you are a Ross School of Business MBA or BBA student looking for a challenging, high-level, paid summer internship in a nonprofit organization, then consider applying to Domestic Corps summer internships. Our program offers a variety of projects, including marketing, strategic planning, new business development, and civic consulting with nonprofits across the U.S.
Students participating in the program must have:
- A record of academic and professional excellence
- Knowledge and skills relevant to the particular agency
- Sensitivity and commitment to issues of community needs, financial concerns, and confidentiality
- A commitment to serving the nonprofit sector
Benefits of Being a Domestic Corps Intern
- Graduate students are compensated $10,000 and undergraduate students are compensated $8,000 for the 10-week internship
- Professional knowledge and skill in nonprofit management
- Opportunity to integrate tools learned in the classroom in a meaningful capacity
Application Process
For more information on our 2009 nonprofit partners and how to apply, please attend one of the Domestic Corps information sessions: Tuesday, December 9 from 5-6 p.m. and Wednesday, December 10 from 3-4 p.m. Both sessions will be located in E0530 (Ross School).
Application forms will be available on our website by December 5, 2009 and applications are due Wednesday, January 7 at noon. The application package includes:
- Application form
- Up-to-date resume
- 1 to 2 page personal statement with your name and email at the top of all pages. The statement should describe why you are interested in the program; include any relevant experience, and what you would like to gain from your experience.
In addition, please have a work reference submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf (this is optional for masters students). Your letter of recommendation may be sent via email or fax to nonprofit@umich.edu or (734) 647-7367.

Timeline
- Student applications are due Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at noon.
- Select candidates will be invited to an interview with NPM staff from January 19-23.
- NPM will introduce select candidates to nonprofits for a final interview. These interviews will be done over the phone—unless it is a Southeast Michigan organization, in which case the interview must be done in person—and should be conducted within 5 business days of being notified by NPM.
- The nonprofit will provide feedback to NPM with 24 hours of the final interview. At this point, NPM may provide an offer to the selected candidate. Offers are made only by NPM staff. Candidates have 72 hours to accept or reject the offer.
- Domestic Corps interns are expected to attend the mandatory orientation in April. Date TBD.
- The internships are expected to occur from May 11 to July 17, 2009.
