Financial Institutions --- This course deals with the management of financial institutions such as commercial banks, savings and loan associations and insurance companies. We will start with some of the basic theories of financial intermediation, institutional features of these organizations and the regulatory framework under which they operate. We will then analyze the key risks faced by these institutions (such as interest rate, liquidity, and credit risk) and how they are managed using various risk-management tools. Students will be introduced to the concept of off-balance sheet banking. We will focus on some of the recent trends in securitizations and other related innovations in banking products. We will use several case studies to analyze the concepts learned in the classroom in an applied setting.
