Eagle Encounter:  Tel: +27 21 85 818 26

Eagle Encounters is a bird-of-prey rehabilitation, conservation, education and eco-tourism project. The centre receives birds that have been injured, poisoned or illegally removed from their nests, and works towards re-releasing healthy, fit, successfully hunting and able-breeding raptors into the wild. Guests to Spier are invited to ‘hold’ tame birds, as well as participate in the daily flying display. Spier supports Cheetah Outreach by donating land, water and electricity for its facilities on the estate. Open daily from 10h00 to 17h00.

Heritage Walk

There are also some interesting facts about Spier’s natural and social heritage and information on some of our related projects. One example is the wastewater treatment plant which combines nature, art and technology, creating a space of cleansing and healing for one of our most precious resources.

The walk is circular, free of charge, and meanders through our protea garden and the avenue of indigenous coral trees. For the more adventurous, there are two callout points which add about 1 hour onto the walk. The walk is approx. 1.5 hours but guests have the choice to end at any time. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

For kids

Butterfly World, one of the more unique attractions of the Western Cape Winelands, consists of a tropical garden in a 1000 m2 green house. This luxuriant paradise makes the free flying exotic butterflies feel right at home.

The butterfly park is located at the cross roads of the Paarl, Stellenbosch and Wellington Wine Routes, near the small Boland town of Klapmuts. Tropical butterflies are raised on breeding farms in countries such as Costa Rica, Philippines, Malaysia and China. Pupae are flown to display parks where the butterflies emerge into their tropical gardens.
