Building the Learning Community of the Future

Business education has undergone a fundamental change from lecture-style classes to interactive methods that integrate individual preparation, teamwork and in-class discussion, while effectively utilizing advanced technology. This is particularly true at the Ross School, internationally recognized for its distinct team-based learning curriculum.

The architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) has designed a new 270,000-square-foot structure that will provide an architectural presence, inside and out, befitting the Ross School’s national stature. More importantly, plans for the proposed building affirm the school’s commitment to create the learning community of the future: a community where faculty, students and corporate partners work together to create new knowledge and learn from each other.

The heart of the addition is the Davidson Winter Garden, a glass-enclosed academic "town square" that brings people together and facilitates the gathering of the entire school community. Surrounding the Davidson Winter Garden will be programmatic components, including an auditorium and classrooms that encourage interaction among teachers and students, faculty offices and student services conveniently clustered together.

“We are delighted that KPF, working with faculty, staff and students, has designed a building that meets our unique needs,” says Dean Robert J. Dolan. “Our new facility, slated to open in 2008, will help us maintain our high standing and provide an optimal environment for bridging theory and practice.”
