General Information

2014 Commencement Exercises

The ceremonies are open to all Ross School May 2014 and August 2014 Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degree graduates and candidates, as well as any December 2013 graduates who did not participate in the May 2013 ceremony. Tickets are required for all graduates and guests.

Date: Friday, May 2nd
Location: Hill Auditorium
BBA, MAcc and MsE Ceremony: 4pm
MBA and PhD Ceremony: 7pm

TIMING OF CEREMONIES

The BBA, MAcc and MsE Commencement Ceremony begins at 4:00pm and the MBA & PhD Commencement Ceremony begins at 7:00pm. Each ceremony is expected to run approximately 90 minutes.

Students are asked to be in their seats no later than 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the ceremony.

All guests must be seated 15 minutes prior to the ceremony start.

Disability Access

The University of Michigan wants to ensure that all graduates and guests can participate fully in this program. Hill Auditorium has accessible entrances on the east and west sides of the building.  The west entrance is very close to Thayer Street, where cars may drop off passengers.  Staff will be available in Hill Auditorium to direct and assist guests to the special areas. Wheelchair seating as well as a seating area with real-time captioning is available for persons with hearing impairments. A sign language interpreter is present during the ceremony.

Please note - Graduates will be able to request seating for their guests, in this area, on their ticket request form (which will be sent to all eligible students in April 2014).

Etiquette

  • All graduates and guests should stand for the National Anthem.
  • All graduates are required to stay for the entire ceremony.
  • Platform party guests will leave before graduates. Please wait for the appropriate cue from the ushers to leave.
  • Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in Hill Auditorium. Anyone found with alcoholic beverages will be escorted out of the facility.
  • Smoking is prohibited in Hill Auditorium. U of M is a smoke-free campus; click here for additional information.

Graduating Students

  • Ushers will be available to assist graduates into Hill Auditorium and in locating the proper seating area.
  • Graduates will access the stage for recognition during the ceremony via a ramp.

Parking

May 2-4 (Fri-Sun) –The gates to all the structures on Central Campus will open on Friday (see detail below) and remain open throughout the weekend. Parking enforcement in these structures will be suspended until the end of enforcement hours on Sunday.

Palmer-Blue Area, Fletcher,Thayer: gates open Friday 9:15 a.m. through Sunday
Thompson, Hill, Church: gates open Friday 9:30 a.m. through Sunday

In addition all University parking areas/surface lots on Central, North and South Campuses will have suspended parking enforcement Fri-Sun, and commencement guests are welcome to park in any available unrestricted parking space (blue, orange, yellow).

Photography

  • Professional photos will be taken of each graduate as he or she shakes hands with
    Dean Davis-Blake on stage, and again as each graduate exits the stage.
  • You are not obligated to purchase any of these photos.
  • Taking photos at the stage by friends or family during the ceremony is not permitted.

Tickets

Ross Commencement

Seating at Hill Auditorium is limited. Tickets are required for all participating graduates and guests. All eligible graduating students will be sent a ticket request survey in April 2014.

Ross Commencement Ticket Request Process:

  • Week of April 1st: Graduating students will be emailed a Ticket Request Survey.
  • Graduates will be asked to provide any special accommodations that their guests may have
    (Examples: wheelchair seating, hearing impaired or hard of hearing).
  • BBA, MAcc & MsE Graduates who are planning to attend the 4:00pm ceremony can request
    up to 6 guest tickets.
  • MBA and PhD Graduates who are planning to attend the 7:00pm ceremony can request
    up to 4 guest tickets.

Please note: If students do not reply to the ticket request email sent the week of April 1st, we
will assume that they are not attending Commencement and do not require tickets.

Students in need of additional tickets for Ross Commencement are encouraged to seek extra tickets from their classmates who may not need them. Commencement tickets cannot be sold.

Tickets that have been requested through the Ticket Request Survey will be distributed in the Winter
Garden on the following dates and times. You will need to show your UM ID in order to pick-up
your tickets.

  • Tuesday, April 22, 4:00-6:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 23, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. AND 5:30-6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 24, 11:30am-12:30pm AND 3-5 p.m

All graduates will need to pick-up their tickets in-person (with their UM-ID). Tickets will not
be released to individuals other than the student that completed the Ticket Request Survey.

Tickets ARE ALSO required for the University Spring Commencement at Michigan Stadium. Please refer to the ticket information listed on the Graduate's Guide for additional details.
