Ever since the birth of the modern environmental movement, a majority of people who care about preserving natural beauty and protecting the natural environment have called for additional government regulations and more spending on certain causes. In some cases–the Clean Air and Clean Water acts–these environmentalists can point to real, measurable successes that ought to be celebrated. In an era of tight budgets, smaller government and increased global competition, however, many people on the Left and the Right are waking up to the idea that bigger government does not always help the environment and, in many cases, can damage it severely. This talk will address both the damage that big government does to the natural environment and the ways in which a smaller, smarter government can result in improved environmental quality.
