University of Michigan Remembers September 11
(Excerpts taken from U-M News & Information Services
website -
http://www.umich.edu/~newsinfo/releases.html and the
U-M Alumni Association website -
http://www.umalumni.com)
The University of Michigan
will commemorate the anniversary of September 11 with a
day-long series of events, including an appearance by Lt.
Gen. Brent Scowcroft, the dedication of a plaque for the
18 alumni who died tragically in the terrorist attacks and
culminating in a student-organized candlelight vigil.
Four UMBS alumni
tragically perished in the World Trade Center attacks on
September 11:
David Dewey Alger
David Dewey
Alger, who was president and chief executive officer of
Fred Alger Management, Inc., earned his master's of
business administration from the University of Michigan in
1968. His mutual fund firm operated from the 93rd floor of
the World Trade Center's North Tower.
Mr. Alger was the U-M Business School's
1997 commencement speaker, chaired its annual fund and was
an active member of the school's Visiting Committee,
comprised of senior level executives who provide counsel
to the dean regarding the programmatic and administrative
direction of the business school. Most recently Mr. Alger
was presented the school's 2001 Alumni Achievement Award.
This award has been renamed in his honor.
His service to the larger University
community included membership on the U-M Investment
Advisory Committee. He was a frequent speaker with student
groups and regularly attended football games, among other
campus activities.
He often appeared on television shows to
discuss Wall Street investments and was known for training
analysts in rigorous research methods. He also wrote
Raging Bull: How to Invest in the Growth Stock of the '90s
in 1991. He joined his brother's firm, Fred Alger
Management, in 1972 and ultimately owned 20 percent of the
firm.
Mr. Alger was born on December 15, 1943, in
California but grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He studied
history at Harvard as an undergraduate prior to attending
the University of Michigan.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine
and his brother, Fred, who remains chairman of Fred Alger
Management and will now return to serve as chief executive
officer. He is also survived by his sister, Suzette Howard
of Aiken, SC; and daughters, Cristina de Marigny Alger
of Cambridge, MA, and Roxanna Geffen of Manhattan.
A memorial service was held on October 5,
2001 at
11 a.m. at St. Thomas in New York City.
Scott Weingard
Scott Weingard was
born and grew up in Long Island, NY. At Half Hollow Hills
High School West, he was a well-rounded student with many
interests, including basketball, tennis, math, science and
computers. Scott chose the University of Michigan
because he was a fan of Michigan athletics and because his
friends were interested in the school. As his brother Mark
said, "He was smart enough to get in and it's a good
school."
Scott graduated
with a bachelor's degree in business administration in
1993. Following graduation he headed to New York City
where he joined Hypnotic Hats, a company his brother
Robert and friends had created. He did well at the
company, which made baseball caps, and quickly became
operations manager for the firm. He left Hypnotic Hats
about one year ago for his job at Cantor Fitzgerald, where
he became enthusiastically involved in equities trading.
Although living in New
York, he returned each year to Ann Arbor for football
games, enjoyed two Rose Bowl games in California and kept
up many friendships from his U-M days.
Scott Weingard, known as
Scottie to his brothers, is survived by his mother, Bonnie
Weingard; brothers, Mark and Robert (Robbie), and serious
girlfriend, Julie Kaufmann, whom Scott introduced to his
family just two weeks before his death.
Memorial gifts are invited
to a scholarship fund created in memory of Scott and two
other U-M graduates, Greg Richards and Larry Polatsch, who
died on September 11. Donations may be sent to:
The Greg Richards, Larry
Polatsch, Scott Weingard Memorial Fund
253 5th Ave., 2nd Floor
New York, NY 10016
Marc Zeplin
Marc Zeplin,
a vice president at Cantor Fitzgerald, received his
bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1990
and his master's degree in business administration from
the U-M in 1993. He worked on the 104th floor of the South
Tower of the World Trade Center.
Mr. Zeplin majored in political science
as an undergraduate and was in the Pilot Program at Alice
Lloyd Hall.
He is survived by his wife, Debra; sons,
Ryan, age 3, and Ethan, 9 months; parents Leonard and
Leona Zeplin; sister, Joslin; and many relatives and
friends.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday,
September 25, 2001 at the Jewish Community Center in Harrison, NY.
The family requests that donations in
Marc's memory be made to the Alliance-College Education
Fund (please donate separately for Ryan Zeplin and for
Ethan Zeplin). Donations can be sent to:

Meredith Whalen
Meredith
Whalen, a research associate for Fred Alger Management,
Inc., earned her bachelor's of business administration
from the University of Michigan in 2000. She worked on the
93rd floor of World Trade Center Tower One.
Ms. Whalen, a native of Canton Township,
Michigan, graduated in 1996 from Plymouth-Salem High School
where she had been a member of the National Honor Society,
the debate team, the Executive Forum and the student
council. She studied at the Business School, serving as a
peer career counselor during her second year and regularly
counseling MBA students interested in the investment
field. She received her BBA with high distinction from the
U-M in the spring of 2000 and went to work for Fred Alger
Management, Inc., on June 1, 2000.
Eager to work, Whalen rarely "left work
at five." Her boss, David Alger, who also died on September
11, had described her as a "rising star."
She is survived by her mother, Patricia;
sister Kristen; sister Deborah; sister Katherine Jackson;
her brother, Stephen, and his wife, Michelle; and two
nieces, Katie Whalen and Katherine Elisabeth Jackson. Her
father, Henry C. Whalen, died in 1989.
A memorial service was held on Saturday,
October 13, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church
in Plymouth.
Friends of the family and the Canton
Township trustees (her father was a trustee) have raised
funds for a memorial bench and plaque honoring Meredith,
which will be placed in Heritage Park in Canton. The
family invites donations in Meredith's memory to the
Canton Foundation Scholarship Fund. Send checks to:

Sun-Times website -
http://www.suntimes.com)
In the largest venture capital funding of a Chicago
start-up thus far this year, a Chicago software company
received $17 million in backing from a group of investors
to help the company expand from its niche in medicine to
other industries.
Madison Information Technologies, founded by Ron and
Jeff Galowich, a father-son team, received $17 million
from a syndicate led by high-profile Boston venture
capitalist Bob Davoli and his Sigma Partners in Boston
along with two Chicago-based groups, Apex Venture Partners

growth by selling the software for customer relationship
management programs in other industries, such as telecom,

Annual Business Conference 2002
Look Who’s Talking At Annual Business
Conference
It’s
time to sign up for the UMBS Annual Business Conference
which will be held on Friday, October 25, 2002, during
Reunion Weekend. Conference seminar sessions have limited
availability and will be filled on a
first-come-first-served basis so register now to get your
top choices.
In each
issue of MichiganMail, we will be highlighting some of the
15 professional and personal development seminars.
Information on the other seminars and online registration
can be found at our Reunion website,
http://www.bus.umich.edu/reunion2002. The Conference
fee, which includes a full day of seminars, continental
breakfast and lunch, is $100.
Here
are descriptions of two seminars which will be presented
by senior UMBS faculty:
Professor Rajeev Batra,
Sebastian S. Kresge Professor of Marketing,
will
discuss lessons from some cases of successful and
unsuccessful brand-building, and offer a framework and
road-map for "strategic brand-building" in his seminar
entitled Strategic
Brand-Building: Lessons and Cases.
He will
apply this framework to our own Business School's
brand-building challenge today, and discuss the School's
plans for creating our own brand. Professor Batra has
taught the very popular "Strategic Brand Management"
elective for several years, and has been tasked by Dean
Dolan to lead the School's brand-building initiatives.
Experience the world of the future in the brand new
Internet 2 lab at the Business School. During
Internet II: The New Cyber
Frontier, you will be able to interact
simultaneously with several different people at multiple
locations, seeing them all on one large screen. With
Internet 2’s fully dedicated bandwidth, video conferencing
will be instantaneous, 24/7, with no delays like those
which happen on the Internet today. In addition,
Internet2 data will travel 40,000 times faster than the
current Internet and 180,000 times faster than the
standard dial-up modem. The entire Encyclopedia
Britannica could travel coast to coast in under one
second. Although many people have heard of Internet2,
most have no idea what it is. Professor Andy McGill,
Director of the Global Business Partnership, invites you
to preview Internet2’s exciting new capabilities during
Reunion Weekend.

UMBS/UM News
U-M Report: Spending Should Rise Slightly as Customer
Satisfaction Holds Steady
(Excerpts taken from UMBS website -
http://www.bus.umich.edu)
Although
customer satisfaction remained the same for the
second quarter of this year - following two straight
quarters of improvement - household spending should not
weaken, according to the American Customer Satisfaction
Index.
The ACSI, which held steady at 73 (out of a possible 100),
measured customer satisfaction levels this quarter in
manufacturing durables (automobiles, personal computers,
household appliances and consumer electronics) and
e-business (Web portals, search engines and news sites).
Professor Claes Fornell, director of the University of
Michigan Business School’s National Quality Research
Center, which compiles and analyzes the quarterly ACSI
data, says that an obvious relationship exists between
spending and the resulting satisfaction of the spender. It
shows up, he says, in the correlation between the ACSI and
government statistics on personal spending.

Ann Arbor, MI
Website Strategy
and Tactics Workshop (September 20)
LEARN TO IMPROVE
YOUR WEB-SITE BUILDING SKILLS! Sooner or later we will
all be involved in the building of web sites for our
companies, departments, student clubs or just for
ourselves.
But building an effective web site is very different
from putting a print brochure together. It requires
judgment and skills in deciding what content to feature
and what functionality to build on the site; how the
many web pages in the site should "fit" together and how
to make the site easily navigable; and how to make each
web page easy and interesting to use. Additionally, as
more and more businesses use the web for
business-to-business application, the web plays an
increasingly important role in all facets of business
life.
To get expert advice on these and other issues, sign up
for the open enrollment day-long workshop on Friday
September 20 on WEB SITE STRATEGY AND TACTICS organized
by the Yaffe Center for Persuasive Communication at the
University of Michigan (http://www.yaffecenter.org).
The workshop will feature nationally-known experts from
relevant disciplines to help students, faculty,
administrators, and practitioners learn how to use and
create more effective web sites. The workshop will be
held at the University's Business School.
Co-sponsored by the
Schools of Art, Business, Information and the Department
of Communications.
For more information
and to register, visit the Yaffe Center online at
