Ann
Lurie gives $25 million to Michigan Engineering
(Excerpts taken from
the University of Michigan News & Information Services
website -
http://www.umich.edu/~newsinfo/releases.html)
Chicago-based philanthropist Ann Lurie has pledged $25
million to the University of Michigan College of
Engineering, the largest gift ever
received by the
college.
"I make this gift for the continued advancement of
interdisciplinary
research, which is necessary for the
future of a superb public university," Lurie said. "I also
wish to encourage like-minded individuals to determine
and
act upon their own significant reasons for investing in
the University
of Michigan."
This gift will help support new programs in biomedical
engineering and integrated microsystems. Drawing on the
college’s historic and
internationally recognized
strengths, these programs offer tremendous opportunities
to improve the quality of life.
"Ann Lurie’s philanthropy and grace has touched the
College of
Engineering in especially meaningful ways,"
said Stephen W. Director,
the Robert J. Vlasic Dean of
Engineering. "First for engendering a sense
of community
through the Lurie Engineering Center and Tower, and now
for providing confidence through this flexible commitment,
helping us
meet our aspirations for biomedical engineering
and integrated microsystems."
According to Interim University President B. Joseph White,
this gift is one
of the most significant ever received by
the University and a bold endorsement of the College of
Engineering.
With this gift, Lurie has given $37 million to the College
of Engineering
and a combined total of $45 million to the
University of Michigan. She is
the widow of Robert H. Lurie, a Michigan Engineering alumnus and entrepreneur.
Bob Lurie and fellow alum Sam Zell became friends and
business partners in the early 1960s while attending U-M.
Their first
ventures, an apartment management service and
acquiring properties in southeastern Michigan, led to the
pair eventually building the largest apartment and
commercial real estate holdings in the country.
Ann Lurie and Sam Zell also contributed $5 million each in
1999 to create
the Samuel Zell and Robert H. Lurie
Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies
at UMBS.

information on what makes people extraordinary in work
organizations. Leading professors in the new field of
positive organizational practices will share knowledge and
practical applications about how people thrive in work
organizations. These sessions should be lively,
informative and useful.
The first session, Mining Your Past to Create Your
Future, will be presented by Robert Quinn, Margaret
Elliott Tracy Collegiate Professor of Business
Administration and Professor of Organizational Behavior

work. This mapping will be a useful reflective
tool for
the next session.
Learn four different ways to bring about spectacular
performance at work.
In the second session, Pathways
for Being Spectacular: A "Best Practices" Panel, four
top experts will offer complimentary lenses for
seeing how
you can be your best. Their advice will be useful as it is
built
from extensive experience and research. The session
is designed to help
you apply these lenses to your own
current work situation to extract
wisdom and invite
reflections. Panelists are Jane Dutton, William Russell
Kelly Professor of Business Administration and Professor
of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management;
Barb Fredrickson, Associate Professor, Department of
Psychology; Kim Cameron, Professor of Organizational
Behavior and Human Resource Management; Gretchen Sprietzer,
Clinical Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human
Resource Management
How can you use the new insights about your past and
your current work situations, gained from the first two
sessions, to design a new future at
work? In this final session, Creating Your New Future
at Work,
Professor Quinn will guide you through a
process of composing a life statement as an anchor and a
beacon for producing spectacular
performance at work. He
has used this form of coaching with executives
in all
walks of life, and in many different work settings. Their
testimonials indicate that the creation and use of this
life statement is transformative.
