Presentation by Muriel Siebert - Recipient of
the Women in Leadership Award
(Excerpts taken from the February 11th issue of
the Monroe Street Journal)
On Thursday, February 7, the Michigan Business Women presented the
‘Women In Leadership Award’ to Muriel Siebert, the first woman to
own a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. The presentation/lecture was
the kick-off event of the Michigan Business Women’s annual conference.
After a brief introduction, Muriel, or Mickie, as she is widely known,
strode to the podium and said, "My story should be entitled ‘Only
In America.’" She proceeded to explain the title by describing
how, after attending 2½ years at Case Western Reserve University, she
dropped out and moved to New York with $500 and a used Studebaker.

"Inspiration
from Wise and Wonderful Women" - A Recap of the 2002 Women in
Leadership Conference
(Excerpts taken from the February 11th issue of
the Monroe Street Journal)
On Friday, February 8, members of the UMBS community, as well as
University of Michigan students, alumni and professionals from across
the country attended the 2002 Women in Leadership Conference in Hale
Auditorium. Both women and men attended panels and workshops, discussed
important business issues, and established productive new relationships.
The group was also honored to hear from two distinguished keynote
speakers: Ginger Graham and Ronna Lichtenberg.
Ginger Graham, Group Chairman, Office of the President of Guidant
Corporation opened the morning with the first keynote address. After
sharing her background, Ms. Graham gave the group advice based on her
extensive business experience. This advice included ten key concepts,
the first of which was "Showing up is not good enough. It is not
just being there but what you do when you are there that is important.
Take the opportunity to make a difference."
Ronna Lichtenberg closed the conference with another inspiring address.
Ms. Lichtenberg challenged the group to define success for themselves
and become CEOs of their lives. She gave the group the following
suggested process as "homework": 1) Develop a personal vision.
To help you do this, spend 20 minutes envisioning your ideal day. Then
picture your worst work day; 2) Develop a business plan to support your
vision. Your personal vision is as important as anything you do at work
so make a serious plan; and 3) Bring the product to market. Develop a
board of directors to support and mentor you through this process.

An Interview with
University of Michigan Interim President B. Joseph White
(Excerpts taken from the February 11th issue of
the Monroe Street Journal)
The University of Michigan is in search of a new president following Lee
Bollinger’s late 2001 departure to become President of Columbia
University in New York City. Currently serving as interim president is
former Dean of the Business School, B. Joseph White. Dr. White was
interviewed on a call-in radio program at Michigan Radio (WUOM, 97.1 fm)
on February 1. Following are excerpts from his interview, including his
thoughts on leading the University of Michigan, the school’s appeal to
small companies, and-of course-the effects of Enron.
When asked about his role as Interim President, President White said,
"It’s a complete thrill every day to serve as President of the
University of Michigan. It’s a tremendous honor and both my wife,
Mary, and I are delighted and pleased to serve the university in this
way at this time." President White sees his current role as part
steward and part activist. He and the rest of the administration are
finding things they can do in a short period of time that will make a
positive impact on the university and the community.

Alumni in the News
Shawn Sabanayagam (MBA
’96), Principal, Trident Partners, LLC Profiled in Monroe Street
Journal
(Excerpts taken from the February 11th issue of
the Monroe Street Journal)
The interview with Shawn Sabanayagam is the second in a new series
Alumni Relations is launching to assist students with the unique
challenges and opportunities in the current economy and job market. This
series, named Real Time...Real People...Real Answers, is based on
interviews with successful UMBS alumni in a variety of industries and
career functions.
In this interview, Shawn offered the following advice for today’s
students looking for internships or positions in his field of private
equity. His advice applies to all who are experiencing difficulty in the
current economic situation:
"UMBS students seeking an internship or a permanent position in
private equity should clearly be very aggressive in their job search
today. More aggressive and focused than, for example, I was in 1996.
There are sectors like biotechnology and areas within healthcare that
have done fairly well in the latter part of 2001. Private equity firms
focusing on doing deals in these sectors are still seeing a good level
of activity. Seek them out and contact them for job opportunities and
interviews. Highlight any prior experience you may have in these
industries to get these firms’ attention. Be more flexible with your
geographic requirements - at least for the short-term. Apply to firms
internationally. Clearly, parts of Latin America such as Argentina are
areas you do not want to pursue. However, parts of Europe are still
seeing activity in the private equity sector. Seek out theses firms and
be proactive about contacting them for opportunities.
If all else fails and you find yourself without a job in your first
choice industry, apply to companies and positions in related fields. For
example, a candidate can work in corporate finance or a related finance
function and switch over to the private equity field when the sector
recovers."
To read more comments from Shawn Sabanayagam, visit the Monroe Street
Journal online at http://www.themsj.com/main.cfm/include/detail/storyid/180511.html.

UMBS Society of
Washington, DC, Board Member/Alumnus To Perform in
"Off-Broadway" Play
Tom Wedemire (BBA ’96) will be performing in Shakespeare's "The
Comedy of Errors" at The Little Theatre of Alexandria, VA,
throughout the month of March. Tom calls the performance an
"off-off-off-off-1, 2, 3...n Broadway" play. Tom’s role is
that of Balthazar the merchant...not a giant role, he says, but not an
insignificant one either.
There are 21 performances of the play beginning on Friday, March 1, and
ending on Saturday, March 23. For all information (e.g. ticket prices,
directions to the theater), please visit The Little Theatre's website at
http://www.thelittletheatre.com/index.html.
Also, you can find the text of the play on-line just by searching
Shakespeare or "The Comedy of Errors." As Tom says,
"Shakespeare has been dead for a long time, so his copyrights have
expired."
Break a leg, Tom!
