A "Thank You" From Interim U-M President, B. Joseph White

(Excerpts taken from a letter to the University of Michigan campus community)

As we prepare to welcome Mary Sue Coleman to the presidency of the University of Michigan on August 1, I want you to know what a pleasure it has been to serve our community as interim president and meet and work with so many of you during the last seven months. I come away from the experience with a renewed and expanded appreciation for the quality of our University and the many, many fine people who comprise it.

You may recall that last fall, when I accepted the Regents' invitation to serve as interim president, I dedicated my term of service to the memories and loved ones of the 18 University of Michigan alumni who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I am pleased to report to you that we have created a U-M scholarship program for the 11 children of the alumni we lost and look forward to a number of these children (the oldest is now four) following in the footsteps of one or both of their parents and enrolling here at Michigan some years in the future.

Last fall, I also communicated the goal of turning over to our next president an academically, professionally, culturally, and financially strong University. I believe that together we have achieved this goal. I have enjoyed working with Mary Sue Coleman to ensure a smooth transition, and I know that you, too, will find our 13th president to be a strong, effective, and thoughtful leader.

My wife, Mary, and I both thank you for the honor and privilege of serving you and our entire university during this period of leadership transition. All the best in the years ahead.

Sincerely,

Joe

UMBS Professor Kathleen Sutcliffe Co-Edits New Book on Medical Mistakes

(Exceprts taken from the UMBS website - http://www.bus.umich.edu)

When the prestigious Institute of Medicine issued its scathing report on medical errors and their deadly toll in November, 1999, all of America took notice. The report opened many eyes to the dangers that patients face from health care mistakes and mishaps, and spurred a movement to increase patient safety.

Now, a new book picks up where the IOM left off, diagnosing the persistent causes of medical errors and offering new ways to think about errors from top experts. Titled "Medical Error: What Do We Know? What Do We Do?" (Jossey-Bass/Wiley), it offers a timely, comprehensive and constructive discussion on a crucial issue in medicine.

University of Michigan medical sociologist Marilynn M. Rosenthal, Ph.D., and Kathleen M. Sutcliffe, Ph.D., an associate professor of organizational behavior and human resource management at the U-M Business School, co-edited the volume, which collects essays from doctors, nurses, health care administrators, researchers and organizational experts involved in the effort to make American health care safer. Rosenthal and Sutcliffe co-wrote introduction and discussion sections.

Business School Faculty Experts Speak Out on Corporate Corruption

(Exceprts taken from the UMBS website - http://www.bus.umich.edu/alumni/web/Aug2BSch)

Several UMBS faculty have recently commented on corporate governance issues in a featured section of the Business School website called "Crisis in Corporate America."  Among those faculty featured are Timothy Fort (Associate Professor of Business Ethics and Business Law, Co-Director of Corporate Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility at the William Davidson Institute), Anjan Thakor (the Edward J. Frey Professor of Banking and Finance and Chair of the Finance Department) and James P. Walsh (the Gerald and Esther Carey Professor of Organizational Behavior and Corporate Strategy).

For example, Tim Fort says that the current crisis "is about creating incentives for people to want to be ethical. Some people will do it on their own. Others need the threat of punishment, and criminal sanctions have a role to play in that. But, in addition, people do respond to wanting to do something that’s good. And it seems that in an awfully complicated world, executives ought to be able to see that the trustworthiness of our institutions, business as well as governmental, makes a difference to how the world views us. I think we’d enhance our security if executives were more ethical."

Day in the Life 2002 - Companies Can Register Now!  We Need You!

Register now to host an MBA1, BBA1, or both at your company this fall!  Since 1994, more than 500 first-year MBAs and BBAs have spent a Day in the Life (DITL) with UMBS alumni at hundreds of U.S. companies, large and small.  Global Blue’s Day in the Life program is a popular job shadowing and recruiting initiative sponsored by Alumni Relations, the Business School and various constituents.  Companies value the early exposure to some of Michigan’s best and brightest recruiting prospects and alumni value the chance to reconnect to the School and share their wisdom and experience with UMBS students.  Students appreciate the first-hand exposure to corporate culture and the professional opportunities that may arise from a DITL visit.  The DITL program provides a wonderful forum for building relationships between students and alumni.

Here’s what two students had to say about their 2001 Day in the Life experience:

  • "I had the opportunity to spend a day at a top-tier consulting company in Chicago.  This Day in the Life experience provided me with a behind-the-scenes look at the consulting industry."
  • "It became clear that in the day in the life of a brand manager, one uses both analytical and creative skills.  The company’s dedication to the training and development of their brand manager was evident in all of our interactions..."

Global Blue will begin accepting online corporate registration for 2002’s Day in the Life program on August 1 at http://www.bus.umich.edu/DayInTheLife.  For more information, contact Alumni Relations at alumni@umich.edu.

A Message from the Nonprofit and Public Management Center

If you serve (or have recently served) as a board member of a nonprofit organization, the Nonprofit and Public Management Center (NPM) at the Business School would like to hear from you!

NPM is searching for Boards that may be interested in participating in a terrific new program for MBA students.  We match selected students with Boards of organizations in their areas of interest to serve as nonvoting members of the Board for a year.  During this year, the students receive training and background in nonprofits and nonprofit governance.  They also are matched with a mentor, who can explain to them how their particular board works.  Finally, they do a research project for the board, to help the organization in a substantive way.  The Board Fellowship program prepares our students for leadership in the communities in which they will work.

NPM is currently piloting this program in four organizations.  But we have many, many more students who are eager to participate.  To enlarge the pool of organizations participating, we need your help. We are interested in organizations located throughout the United States, and particularly those in the Midwest and the East Coast.

If you are involved with a 501(c)3 organization that might be a good site for student involvement (no religious congregations, please), please let us know by calling Charlene Fluder at 734.763.4214 or contacting NPM via e-mail at nonprofit@umich.edu.  The Center will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the program and provide materials to share with your fellow board members. We currently are recruiting organizations to participate for the 2002-03 academic year, so please get in touch with us at your earliest convenience if you have an interest in participating.

Sincerely,

Nonprofit and Public Management Center

Scholarship Program to Honor Alumni Who Died Sept. 11

(Exceprts taken from U-M News & Information Services website - http://www.umich.edu/~newsinfo/releases.html)

Interim President B. Joseph White announced on July 18 that the University of Michigan will offer scholarships for undergraduate tuition to children of U-M graduates who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

White, who announced the scholarship program at the Board of Regents meeting, dedicated his term of service to the memories, families and friends of the U-M alumni who were killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon when he accepted the interim presidency in November. His appointment began Jan. 1 and ends when Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Iowa, becomes the U-M’s 13th president Aug. 1.

White, the Wilbur K. Pierpont Collegiate Professor and former dean of the Business School, said, "With this scholarship, the University community joins me in honoring members of our Michigan family who died last September. We hope that this living memorial will bring some comfort to their survivors and assurance that we too remember and cherish the memory of those whose lives were lost. My hope is that some of their children will someday attend our great university."

Four Business School alumni perished in the September 11 attacks - David D. Alger (MBA 1968), Scott Weingard (BBA 1993), Marc Scott Zeplin (MBA 1993) and Meredith L. Whalen (BBA 2000).

New York, NY

Monday Night Movie at Bryant Park (August 5)
Join the UMBS Club of New York for "Monday Night Movie at Bryant Park" featuring "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967).

Time: 8:00 p.m. Be sure to arrive no later than 7:00 p.m., as the park fills quickly, and available lawn space is scarce.

Where: 42nd St. & 6th Ave., next to the NY Public Library. Take the 1, 2, 3, B, D, F, N, Q, R, S, V, or W to 42nd; or the 7 to 5th. When you arrive, look for the M flag, or call the club hotline at 914-882-2597.

The well-loved comedy/drama proved to be Spencer Tracy's last movie and Katharine Hepburn's second Oscar win. A liberal San Francisco couple gets a surprise when their daughter (Hepburn's real-life niece, Katharine Houghton) brings home her African-American fiancé (Sidney Poitier) to meet the parents. Director Stanley Kramer, better known for his issue-laden social dramas, manages a relatively light touch here while sidestepping the preachy. 108 Minutes.

Hope to see you there!
